Two Thumbs Down for Herrick's Text

This term, I used this text in my advanced composition course on argumentation; however, I will NEVER use it again or require my students to purchase it. The text is primarily problematic because Herrick does not provide sufficient examples or explanations for students, who are often confused by his terse chapters and explanations. Additionally, the fourth edition has numerous errors. As just one example, on pg. 50, Herrick writes, "Three guidelines are helpful" and then he lists only two. (I called Strata Publishing to determine if this was an error, and it was.) Exercises at the back of the book are few and uninteresting. The instructor's edition, additionally, provides only the answers to student exercises but provides no other guidance or support for instructors. The organization of the chapters also is highly problematic. For instance, Chapter 5 overviews concepts of support, validity, and linguistic consistency. Yet these concepts are then more fully developed in Chapters 6 & 7, 10 & 11, and 13. An instructor teaching the text, then, really ought to just skip Chapter 5 to get a fuller coverage of the concepts in the other chapters. I've had to purchase David Zarefsky's "Argumentation: The Study of Effective Reasoning" via The Great Courses to supplement my instruction.
