Transforming Scholarship is a user-friendly work of practical guidance and inspiration for supporting a student's interest in a Women's Studies degree. Berger and Radeloff use empirical evidence to help students with the major barriers they face when exploring Women's Studies: the negative response a student often faces when announcing to the world that he or she is interested in Women’s Studies; and the perceived lack of employment and career options that supposedly comes with graduating with a Women's Studies degree. This book will support students to think critically about what they know, how to demonstrate what they know, and how to prepare for life both personally and professionally after the degree. Transforming Scholarship is a practical guide for students interested in women’s and gender studies that targets advanced undergraduates who have a firm connection to the discipline. This book is ideal for women’s and gender capstone courses, and for those who have finished their degree and need a resource to assist in conceptualizing the answers to the question "What’s next?"
This second edition of Transforming Scholarship focuses on areas that undergraduates might want integrate into their women’s and gender studies education: study abroad, civic engagement projects, internships, independent studies, and honors theses. It includes exercises to help flesh out talents, passions, and skills, and how to link them to employment, information about the diversity of employment opportunities (and further professional training) available, and a plan to help prepare for graduation. It also delves into how to live a feminist life after graduation, including activism after college, building and sustaining feminist communities, and feminist parenting. The authors have also added new "Point of View" boxes throughout the book, where scholars focus on contemporary issues and deepen a student’s understanding of the organizations and individuals fighting to end sexist oppression.

Review
"Every Women’s and Gender Studies student―and instructor―should read Transforming Scholarship. It provides practical advice for students’ transition from ‘everyone should take this course!’ to articulation of the personal and professional value of their degree, informed by the history and experiences of Women’s and Gender Studies students and professionals. There should be a copy of this great resource in every Women's Center."― Jeannie Ludlow, Women’s Studies, Eastern Illinois University
"In reflections on the range of what we do in WGS, how to talk about WGS, and what you can do with a WGS degree, this engaged and lively book lays out an exciting roadmap of the field’s breadth and scope. Its strength is especially in the way it makes connections between WGS and the rest of one’s life, while at university and afterwards. Ideal and highly recommended reading both for people new to WGS as well as to more experienced practitioners."―Ann Braithwaite, Diversity and Social Justice Studies, University of Prince Edward Island
"Transforming Scholarship is a book that every women’s and gender studies major should read. Full of practical advice for how to pursue a meaningful and feminist career, the book also provides students with a wide range of real-life examples of how people are using their women’s and gender studies degrees after graduation. The perfect book for an undergraduate senior seminar or capstone course."― Astrid Henry, Women’s Studies, Grinnell College
"Transforming Scholarship is the ideal guide for young people starting their journeys in women’s and gender studies. Berger and Radeloff provide an engaging, practical, evidence-based map of both the field and the many paths where it can lead. They invite readers to reflect, share their knowledge, and then chart their own course. This book is a gift to faculty and students."― Elizabeth Cole, Women’s Studies, University of Michigan
"Berger and Radeloff have revised their ground-breaking 2011 practical guidebook to women's and gender studies by expanding on the field's applications for study, research, and career development... The references offer practical as well as scholarly materials for further research, making this guide a unique reference source for career shelves as well as a useful supplementary classroom text. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Lower-level undergraduates and above."― G. M. Herrmann, SUNY College at Cortland, CHOICE Reviews

Invaluable Resource!
By AmP1225
As a recent Women's Studies graduate during one of the worst recessions in American history, I had no shortage of folks bombarding me with that ever-present question "What on earth can you do with a degree in Women's Studies?" "Transforming Scholarship" helped me immensely as I transitioned from an undergraduate student out into the working world. This book helped me to mitigate many discussions with co-workers about why I chose Women's Studies as my major (one of the best decisions of my life) as well as why my background in Women's Studies made me a stronger, better counselor and advocate for social change. This book is an invaluable resource for anyone interested in social justice, from both students in the beginnings of their undergraduate Women's Studies career, to those out already out in the working world. Michele Berger and Cheryl Radeloff provide an insightful, thorough and supportive guide on harnessing our feminist passions to change the world for both Women's Studies majors and non-majors alike. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

The career counselor I wish I'd had!
By hltaylor
If you're entering college and wondering what to major in, a recent graduate or a parent of a recent graduate, this book will help you chart the waters of an oft misunderstood major. Are you wondering how to explain your women's studies major to family and friends? My favorite chapter profiles six women's and gender studies graduates and how they are transforming the world. This chapter lists dozens of career paths that graduates have taken including HIV counseling, civil rights law, psychiatric nursing, non-profit work, writing novels or journalism and more. This book packs a punch of data and stories of real men and women that prove that this major equips students with critical thinking skills to tackle any field with perspective, consideration and above all - passion.
I wish I'd had this book in college!

Doesn't reflect valuable feminisms like intersectionality
By Amazon Customer
This book is essentially a crash course on how to convince the general public that a women's studies degree/minor/certificate is valuable by telling you how to market yourself if you have a WGS degree, get a job with a WGS degree, or convince your loved ones that a WGS degree isn't a waste of time and money.
Unfortunately I found this text to be annoyingly basic, and that might be fine for first year students just learning about feminism, but for anyone who has even a simple understanding of what WGS is as a discipline may find this reading aggravating. The content is reductive and often lacks a critical perspective. The authors did not present an intersectional lens on many issues, and it was painful to read for it's mainstream/whitestream understanding of feminism. Valuable issues like classism or ableism seemed to be left out entirely, and it placed a heavy emphasis on WGS as a gender-central--and only gender-central--discipline, often tacking on things like race as a single sentence in a side box or an afterthought at the end.
Totally a waste.
