About the Author
Harinder S. Kohli is President and CEO of the Centennial Group. He is also the Chief Executive of the Emerging Markets Forum and is on the Advisory Board of the Asian Institute of Technology. Prior to starting the Centennial Group, Kohli spent 26 years with the World Bank in a series of senior positions. He has led World Bank teams that participated in the Multilateral Working Groups of the Middle East Peace Process and developed a conceptual programme for Economic Development in the Middle East. This work became the foundation for the international development assistance to West Bank and Gaza after the peace accord.
He is the principal author of the report of an Eminent Persons Group entitled Towards a New Asian Development Bank in a New Asia and of World Bank’s report Infrastructure Development in East Asia and Pacific: Towards a New Public Private Partnership. In addition he has written articles and delivered speeches on Asian Economics, Private Capital Flows, Regional Economic Cooperation, Industrial Development, Enterprise Development and Privatization, Energy, Information Technology and the Middle East Economic Development issues.
Prior to joining the World Bank, Kohli worked with the Union Carbide in India and the Pechiney Group in France. He has a Masters in Business Administration from the Harvard Business School (elected Backer Scholar with High Distinction) and a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Punjab University, India (First Class Honors). He is married to Paulina Ledergerber Crespo, an anthropologist at the Smithsonian Institute’s Museum of Natural History.
Anil Sood, in his 30-year career at the World Bank, occupied many senior positions including Vice President, Strategy and Resource Management, and Special Advisor to the Managing Directors. He has since advised chief executives and senior management of a number of development organizations including the African Development Bank, the Islamic Development Bank, the United Nations Development Programme, and the United Nations Economic Commission of Africa, on matters of strategy and development effectiveness.

A heavily researched and developed book written and edited by contributors from the World Bank and other government ministries. The strengths are its excellent data and reporting out on key sectors in India under the premise that India can leap to affluent society status in a single generation with improvemts in multiple sectors, particulalry infrastructure and the education at all levels. The ambition for affluent society status is rather gung ho, a salutation of India's aggressive economic growth that has indeed lifted the boats of 200 million of its 1.2 billion inhabitants.
Not much has been said about the effect of growth on the environment and now is the time to think about designing an industry and economic system that complements the environment and quality of life. The term Environment Refugee refers to people who move to beautiful, pristine places where the air and water are clean, the grass is green and the sky is blue. While such places undoubtedly exist in India, the major cities and towns are smog ridden, polluted, traffic clogged and a health hazard. Is this the affluent, brave new India the Indians want?
