Matthew N.O. Sadiku is professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Prairie View A&M University. He is the author of over 100 professional papers and fifteen books including Fundamentals of Electric Circuits, Metropolitan Area Networks, Numerical Techniques in electromagnetics, and Introduction to Broadband Communication Systems. His current research interests are numerical techniques in electromagnetics and computer communication networks. He is a registered professional engineer and a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

An Excellent EM reference book

I was looking for a very good EM reference book. I found this, and it's amazing. Mathematically rigorous, easy to understand, and very well written, this book covers EM from a to z, including transmission lines and antennas. The examples are great, too, because you can work them without the the author giving too much away in the answers but just enough. This is an excellent book for reference, since the chapters nearly stand alone. So, one can read one chapter about electrostatics or skip ahead to another about Faraday's law without getting lost in a tome-like textbook where the author tries too hard to blend together the chapters for fluidity and cohesion, like a novel when it's supposed to be a textbook. This book doesn't do that, and I love it for that. However, the organization of the material is very well thought-out and makes good sense. Get this book if you're struggling in an EM class or you want an excellent reference book to page through. I highly recommend it.

Great Book for Understanding EM

I have the second edition of Elements of Electromagnetics. This is the book I go to if I really want to understand an EM topic. I find that for understanding the derivations of the laws and formulas this book is the best that I have opened. I am reading Feynman's lectures on EM and often go to this book when I can't follow Feynman. I haven't found many errors in the text itself, but reading others comments it seems the answers to the problems are not always correct. Still, for a good understanding it would be hard to top Sadiku.

Don't buy the 3rd Edition

This book (3rd edition) is from hell. The TA who solved/wrote the problems in this book was clearly on crack. Not even the solutions manual can be trusted to have the right answer. This is one of the few books I've found where you would be better off without solutions, since so many of those given are completely and utterly wrong.
It is interesting to note that you sometimes have to look at the solutions manual to understand what the hell the problem is actually supposed to say.
This book teaches electromagnetics and baldness. The latter comes from tearing out ones hair looking for the problem in ones work that doesn't actually exist, but does exist in the solutions you are comparing your work to.
Two stars because the book functions nicely as a club and projectile.

Private Islands Review

This beautiful book offers a vast amount of aerial photographs and information about private islands around the world--from celebrity to residence-exclusive, to islands available for rent--each paradise has a unique geo-makeup, history, and of course, aesthetic architecture.

I love travelling and the open sea, so "Private Islands" is my interpretation of an international-island-guide for the luxury tourist. There's a world map included, pinpointing where the islands are located, and section that displays all the wonderful islands with resort spots for travellers. Skorpios on the Ionian Sea is one of the prettiest in my opinion--with such pretty greenery. (We learn in the book it's owned by the billionaire Onassis family.)

As an admirer of boats and lighthouse structures (and their historical appeal), I'm certainly amazed by the fact that this book showcases a total of 8 islands with lighthouses.

If you're a travel-enthusiast and love photography, this book is definitely for you. Just looking at the photos and reading the history brings me to a lovely, dream-like place...with every page like relaxing on an private island itself.

Two Different Views

The idea of a book of island pictures is enticing, exciting, and inviting. Casually flipping through the more than 200 pages and almost 100 islands, I was struck by the exotic and beautiful locations. Unfortunately, for me, this book did not live up to all those expectations. My wife, however, enjoyed the book very much.

The World of Private Islands is a compilation of photographs mostly taken by Farhad Vladi with text by Martina Matthiesen. The islands are grouped by style, Islands with Lighthouses, Celebrity Islands, Atolls, etc., not geography. Each island is presented in a two page spread, with a paragraph or two in English and German. The book is large format, roughly 10 x 12, and many photographs span two pages. The paper is very heavy, the printing and binding is perfection.

For a time, I enjoyed dreaming about these islands. They are beautiful and the thought of maybe going to one or two of them (the Thousand Island area is inexpensive and very accessible) was a nice dream. I'm very happy, the islands I know and love were not included in this book - they are wonderful secrets that publicity would ruin. I am predisposed to love islands - some of the more memorable times in my life were spent on beautiful secluded islands. I love Paul Theroux - somebody that is an expert at island living and an incredible author.

The difficulty I have with this book is the quality of the photographs. From the introduction and photo credits, Vladi has personally taken most of these pictures. Sadly, they do not hold up well to the extra large format of this book. I have become accustom to the incredible high quality of TeNeues publishing, and the source photographs fall short. The first few seem remarkable, but then a formula shows up - an aerial view of the island, a close up of a beach, and the equivalent of a real estate listing image of the house or resort on the island. Most of the images are grainy and soft. If I had to guess, these look like higher speed 35mm color negative film shot through a helicopter window - not the most high resolution method of photographing these incredible locations. I am being critical of the photographs; I am a photographer and have studied photographers for a very long time. My wife recognized what I said after I mentioned it to her, but did not see them as lower quality images.

The other part I find difficult with this book, Vladi is the owner and founder of a company that sells and rents islands. His introductory text talks about how he has been "involved in over 2,000 island transactions and countless island lettings..." After island 30, it began to look like the book is more of an MLS real estate advertisement, than an idyllic escape to dream land. I could live with the commercial connection, if the images were more on par with National Geographic or any of the incredible photographers TeNeues has published.

I guess I was expecting a book with more depth, more insight. I certainly expected higher quality photographs. If, on the other hand, I had expected something that looks like the Private Island website, or a listing of places I could rent; well this book is spectacular.

As a counterpoint to my view of this book, my wife enjoyed it very much. She is an Earth Science instructor. Her first impression was, oh no, another expensive, over the top, not sustainable buying and renting of paradise. About half way through, she started adding Post-It tags to identify her favorite islands. By the time she finished the book; she had a big smile and said that this is a wonderful book. Maybe paradise hadn't been as spoiled as she first thought.

Daydreams are made of this

This is the perfect book for days when work is crazy or when you just need a change of pace. It's the ideal book for imagining yourself on a warm, sunny, uncrowded beach with a drink in your hand staring out over miles of turquoise water or beautiful landfalls in the distance. Or on rocky cliffs, not far from your own castle, holding a hot drink while watching the waves crash against the shore. I want to go on vacation! If only I had a gazillion dollars so I could afford to rent (or buy!) one of these luxurious islands.

This large coffee table book, 12.8 x 10.1 x 1.1 inches is substantial. The pages are heavy, glossy quality stock. The photographer, Farhad Vladi is the founder and owner of the company Vladi Private Islands which the world's leading island brokerage company. He sells and rents out private islands, island-related properties and island shares around the world. Over the years, he has assembled an archive covering over 12,000 islands all over the world, probably the world's largest archive on privately-owned islands. He photographs private islands from a helicopter, like those in this book. The only thing that I thought could have been better about the photos, is that some could have been a little higher resolution. That's not to say that they were fuzzy or anything, just that some of the little tiny details nosy people like me want to see were hard to pick out in some photographs. Considering he's flying around in a helicopter and probably taking pictures through the glass of the windshield (while moving) they were more than acceptable to me.

There is a map in the front of the book showing all the destinations, some of which I had never heard of. The book was divided into sections which I liked, because he divided them up the way I would have. The sections are:

Celebrity Islands
Exclusively for Rent
Islands with Charming Residences
Islands with Lighthouses
Islands with Their Own Airstrips
Atolls
Islands with Resorts
Treasure Islands
XXL Islands
XXS Islands
Lake and River Islands

My favorites were the islands with castles and the ones with the charming residences. The Ile De Costaeres in Brittany, France and the Boldt Castle on the St. Lawrence River in New York were the ones I spent the most time looking at. There's even one called Isle of Gigha in Scotland that Mick Jagger tried to buy but the 156 inhabitants beat him on the price. It's the little blurbs like this on the pages with the photos that make the book fun to read about while you're drooling over the pictures. This book would make a great gift for anyone who likes to dream.

About the Author
Josephine Cox was born in Blackburn, one of ten children. At the age of sixteen, Josephine met and married her husband Ken, and had two sons. When the boys started school, she decided to go to college and eventually gained a place at Cambridge University. She was unable to take this up as it would have meant living away from home, but she went into teaching -- and started to write her first full-length novel. She won the 'Superwoman of Great Britain' Award, for which her family had secretly entered her, at the same time as her novel was accepted for publication.

Star Crossed Lovers

LOVERS AND LIARS by Josephine Cox

This was my first book by Josephine Cox and I'm definitely going to be reading more by her. LOVERS AND LIARS was a historical romance with a pair of star-crossed lovers. Cox does a wonderful job with this story, creating a cast of characters that help move the story line, with the central story of John and Emily pulling the reader in for a page turning book.

The story takes place in early 1900's England, and Emily and John are in love. As it is customary for this era, John must ask permission to court Emily. She's sixteen and he is twenty. Unfortunately, the man of the "house", Uncle Clem, is a mean and terrible man, and does not want Emily to be seeing John. He beats up John to the point of nearly killing him. John decides that it is not the right time for Emily and John to be together, so he leaves town, but promises Emily he will return a richer man and will take her away from her uncle, who is abusive and mentally cruel.

Through a series of misunderstandings and lies and an event that changes Emily forever, the two are kept apart. But as the years progress, Emily and John never forget each other, and hope that someday they will be reunited.

This book is definitely for those who enjoy an old-fashioned style of story. Fans of contemporary romances may not buy into some of the characters that populate the book, and the plot may be a bit over the top for others, but I really enjoyed this book and I plan on reading more by Josephine Cox.

Predictable and Cliched

If you don't mind reading a book where you can predict the plot from start to finish, then Lovers and Liars is for you. Don't get me wrong, the writing is good but its far from innovative and a little too sickly sweet for my tastes.

Here's the plot: Emily loves John a handsome farmboy, but her evil uncle Clem hates John and does everything he can to keep him apart. John's well-intentioned Aunt does the same to a lesser degree. But through it all, and despite some amazing prospects Emily LOOOOVESSS John and refused to move on. Likewise John LOOVESSSS Emily and never forgets her. (Yawn).

Frankly I grew bored with this story. Instead of it being sweet and romantic that Emily loves John and vice versa I kept thinking to myself MOVE ON. You people are way too obsessed. Also the author makes liberal use of the 'big misunderstanding' plot. This plot device rears its ugly head at least twice and it was very annoying.

About the time Emily's dad hooks up with John, I began to find my eyeballs rolling in pain at the series of too-good-to-be-true-coincidneces which plague this book.

Three stars. It wasn't bad. But It was far from innovative.

Somewhat disappointing, fair to OK.

King's book 'Red Star Over Russia' is one of the best books I have on this subject matter but this one average at best. Plus, by the time I opened it up it had some damage to the dust jacket and too late to return.

Good pictures and stupid comments

Many of the earlier posters very interesting. But the comments of David King rarther stupid.That he dislikes the Soviet political development is his truth. To discuss it in every comment is not necessary. This type oc comments are as if he was afraid of being accused of some sort of pro-Sovietism or Stalinism. Much of what he writes is also simply not factual. It would have been better if he had kept himself in rein. Giving just the factual information. His comments were usual - from both sides - during the Cold war.Now no longer necessary. To explain what I mean you can take the example of a book in Russia today about the US architecture of the 20th century. It would be stupid to write high minded captions to pictures of Empire State Building or Chrysler Building discussing the role of US monopoly capitalism for the depression and the crises 1929 and 1937.
