Good book for migrating technical types

The book "Managing Systems - Development 101" by James T. Karam is written with the engineer's perspective in mind, specifically targeted towards those technical types who find themselves advancing into positions requiring managerial and oversight responsibilities, in addition to their technical expertise.
Short and concise, the book walks through the phases of project development, from inception and planning, execution and tracking, and review and improvement. In addition to the project-oriented chapters, the book has sections on employee performance review and incentives, organizational dynamics, and origanization-software interaction.
As a specific technical type moving more into a managerial role myself, I found the book an easy read (being only 111 pages or so), but dense, in the sense that there are a lot of benchmark figures and information that are hard to assimilate in one simple reading. I'll be using this book as reference in the future.
The projects covered are of a scope far larger and more complex than those I am encountering, but many of the core insights are useful nonetheless. Many ideals are expressed condensed as one-liners, making them easy to remember and use. Particularly useful are the pointers on project planning, execution and tracking. This subject is often presented in terms that have little real-world applicability, but the author presents real-world examples and data to make the points more accesible.
All in all, an excellent buy for the technical type migrating into managerial roles.

Read This Book If You Are Doing Product Development

If you are an expert on product development and systems design, read this book. You will certainly come away with additional tools for your toolbox.
If you are a novice or a leader of a product development function, read this book. You will gain valuable insight into the product development process that will enable you to learn, lead, and prosper.
The book is practical and hands-on -- no pie in the sky theory stuff produced by some consulting company. I would imagine that using just one tip in the book will save your team $1000 and probably much more. Just learning how to run a project or team meeting productively will do wonders for your process.
My only criticism is the book tends to make recommendations of proprietary and/or monopolistic software at the expense of other software.
