The Sonderkommando of Auschwitz-Birkenau consisted primarily of Jewish prisoners forced by the Germans to facilitate the mass extermination. Though never involved in the killing itself, they were compelled to be "members of staff" of the Nazi death-factory. This book, translated for the first time into English from its original Hebrew, consists of interviews with the very few surviving men who witnessed at first hand the unparalleled horror of the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp. Some of these men had never spoken of their experiences before. Over a period of years, Gideon Greif interviewed intensively all Sonderkommando survivors living in Israel. They describe not only the details of the German-Nazi killing program but also the moral and human challenges they faced. The book provides direct testimony about the "Final Solution of the Jewish Problem," but it is also a unique document on the boundless cruelty and deceit practiced by the Germans. It documents the helplessness and powerlessness of the one-and-a-half million people, 90 percent of them Jews, who were brutally murdered in the gas chambers of Auschwitz-Birkenau.

Review
"This is a book that must be read by all who dare draw close to the killing, those who dare to come close—as close as non-survivors can come—to the inferno.”—Michael Berenbaum
"Gideon Greif’s documentation and analysis of the inner world of the Jews who were forced to be part of the Grief in Auschwitz is a haunting reading experience. It is with rare sensitivity and empathy that Greif approached the last survivors of this unit, who were at the heart of the inferno. They poured their hearts outto him after long decades of silence. The reader is thus acquainted with the detGrief’sails of the death industry, and they accompany and disturb him for a long while."—Dina Porat,Head ofthe Rosenberg School of Jewish Studies, Tel Aviv University (Dina Porat)

Nothing to say
By Jeffrey Phillips
This is probably as close as any general reader, student or researcher will come to a reality that even now, 60 years later, remains at once mysterious and horrifying - a must read for anyone interested in this period of time.

Superbly researched and documented: An invaluable resource.
By D.K.
To say the least, this is a very important work of historical research. Gideon Grief is a historian who has tirelessly worked to promote true and honest research about the Holocaust, at Yad Vashem, with the Auschwitz Memorial and Museum, and many other renowned universities as well as organizations that raise awareness of this subject. There are no exaggerations, just testimony and his historical research to make sure that omissions and mistaken memories, or dates, would not appear in the work. Grief's book is essential for two reasons, it is one that delves into the histories and psyches of the men who were forced to burn the bodies of those murdered at by the Nazis during their horrific "Final Solution," as well as the countless others, who were not Jewish, but were to be eliminated, murdered, and incinerated in the end. Let their memory live - Grief's book is a true tribute to all these victims.

Invaluable
By Paul
There is no shortage of testimonies about Auschwitz -- thousands of people survived the camp. I've grown up with the stories from the survivors in my own family. But there are so few who actually survived as members of the sonderkommando. This was the most tragic place in the most tragic of places, and the long, frank, thoughtful testimonies offered in this book provide a glimpse not only into the Nazis' death machine, but also into the conflict and the horror these men experienced.
