About the Author
Bill Streever wrote the national bestseller Cold and the award-winning Heat. As a biologist, he has worked on issues ranging from climate change to the restoration of Arctic tundra to underwater noise to the evolution of cave crayfish. With his wife and co-captain, he splits his time between Alaska and their cruising sailboat, currently in Central America.

If you track hurricanes, read this book

This book is an in depth review of the history of weather forecasting from the ancient Greeks to your morning weather channel, intertwined with the trials of two new cruising sailors learning the harsh lessons of the ocean for the first time. If you are an arm chair sailor or a circumnavigator wannabe this is mandatory reading. If you ever survived a major storm at sea, you'll nod your head as you read along. Streever knows his stuff, he and his co-captain are 'been there, done that' folks. The morning weather forecast will take on a whole new meaning after you finish this great read.

Streever blends a fairly comprehensive history of weather forecasting with a more immediate concern of navigating his sailboat arid the Gulf of Mexico. Wonderfully inventive, entertaining and educational.
