The Second Arab Awakening: And the Battle for Pluralism, by Marwan Muasher

A knowledgeable insider provides the first clear view of what has happened in the Arab world and why

This important book is not about immediate events or policies or responses to the Arab Spring. Instead, it takes a long, judicious view of political change in the Arab world, beginning with the first Awakening in the nineteenth century and extending into future decades when—if the dream is realized—a new Arab world defined by pluralism and tolerance will emerge.Marwan Muasher, former foreign minister of Jordan, asserts that all sides—the United States, Europe, Israel, and Arab governments alike—were deeply misguided in their thinking about Arab politics and society when the turmoil of the Arab Spring erupted. He explains the causes of the unrest, tracing them back to the first Arab Awakening, and warns of the forces today that threaten the success of the Second Arab Awakening, ignited in December 2010. Hope rests with the new generation and its commitment to tolerance, diversity, the peaceful rotation of power, and inclusive economic growth, Muasher maintains. He calls on the West to rethink political Islam and the Arab-Israeli conflict, and he discusses steps all parties can take to encourage positive state-building in the freshly unsettled Arab world.

Review
Praise for The Arab Center:

“This book is a must read to understand how to address the challenges facing the Middle East today.”—President Bill Clinton

"Muasher's book raises what may be the most damning criticism of the Bush administration's Middle East policy — that it has unwittingly undercut the very people the United States wanted most to help."—David Ignatius, Washington Post

(Bill Clinton, David Ignatius)

"For the Arab awakening to have any future, the ideology that is most needed now is the one being promoted least: Pluralism. Until that changes, argues Marwan Muasher, in his extremely relevant new book . . . none of the Arab uprisings will succeed."—Thomas L. Friedman, New York Times (Thomas L. Friedman New York Times)

Great book and a must read
By Suheil Muasher
This is a very informative book by a very well informed and experienced writer on middle east affairs. The author presents arguments that the second Arab Awakening has just begun and it will be years from now before we see its conclusion. The author presents his views that there needs to be a third force, besides the totaliterian Military and Islamists rule, that believes in a democratic, inclusive, and pluralistic new middle eastern societies. The book is concise and very easy to read. I recommend it highly to anyone interested and possibly confused about what is happening today in the Arab countries. Great Read

Insightful and Promising
By Merissa Khurma
I strongly believe that narratives of the past, present and projections of the future of the Arab world should always be assessed and chronicled by thinkers, policymakers and academics from the region.

As protests, mass movements and revolutions swept Arab societies beginning in 2010, the West was quick to respond with catchy sound-bites (The Arab Spring to name one of them) to ‘brand’ these developments in an effort to explain the surprising and inexplicable emergence of these waves; particularly to the average observers with little understanding of or knowledge in the region’s history.

It is against this backdrop that I recommend “The Second Arab Awakening and the Battle for Pluralism” by former Jordanian diplomat and government official Marwan Muasher.

As an Arab analyst of the region, Muasher offers a thorough assessment of the political, economic and socio-cultural developments in the Arab world since the Tunisian street vendor set himself on fire in anger and frustration over his state of being. Muasher dubs this new wave; the Second Arab Awakening and provides the reader with a clear historical context to the most recent uprisings tracing it back to the First Arab Awakening in the 1940’s and 50s; thereby answering many pending questions about the why and the how.

The book also injects a dose of reality, particularly for western audiences that the Second Arab Awakening is not a three-year affair that will miraculously result in a fully blossomed Arab Garden of pluralism, prosperity, and prosperity. In fact, the region will have to go through many transformational phases and they do not have to be mass revolutions or bloody uprisings. The ingredients Muasher puts forward are indeed logical and practical starting with his emphasis on a new approach to education. He dedicates an entire chapter to Education for Pluralism; in which he notes that the seeds of acceptance and coexistence of the other, especially in an ethnically and religiously diverse Arab world, should be planted in school and early learning. These values must be reflected in our educational material but also in the teaching methodology, that is to say more emphasis should be placed on critical thinking, independent research and creativity. And if I may add, now more than ever, given that there is a plethora of tools in social media, science and technology etc available to all, our region has a unique opportunity to utilize these tools to create more open, pluralistic and thus stronger communities.

One key element of the book which, is completely missing, from Muasher’s first publication “The Arab Center” is his focus on youth. Many of the uprisings in Tunisia, Egypt in particular and elsewhere were primarily driven by youth; frustrated by high levels of unemployment, lack of progress, and the paucity of freedoms of expression etc. However, as Muasher notes, those youth activists of the Second Awakening have succeeded in identifying what they are opposed to rather than what they “are for.” Nevertheless, hope lies in the next generations to address the challenges they face and work positively and peacefully toward pluralism. I share Muasher’s optimism in this regard and yes it will be a long and hard struggle ahead, but it is the only way our region will survive and reach its full potential on all fronts; economically, culturally and politically.

This Book Should be in Every Home in the Middle East - Including Israel
By Alastair Browne
Marwan Muasher is a former foreign minister of Jordan, and has seen beyond his own culture to that encompassing the entire Arab, Islamic, and Jewish world, and beyond to the U.S. and Europe. He erases the stereotypes of a perpetual, warlike Middle East and brings home the realities of what is really happening over there, and demonstrates that there are solutions, but, like anything else, requires time. By this, he means decades, not months.
This is a book every Muslim should have, whether he is devoted or not, regardless of his ethnic or tribal background.
As the title states, this book is about the Second Arab Awakening, and beyond that. The First Arab Awakening occurred in the late nineteenth, earth twentieth centuries, with the realization of an Arab identity, and of their ethnic and tribal backgrounds, apart from the Ottoman Empire and the European colonizers. What followed were independence movements and the reestablishment of their own countries. Granted, many of their countries were established among European borders, ignoring their tribal and ethnic lines, but, in times, these countries established their own identities regardless, especially with the discovery of oil, and how they can use it to control the world's economies. However, this book does not discuss this.
The First Awakening, however, did not last, with kingdoms in charge, giving oil wealth to their subjects to keep them silent, repressing certain religions and ethnic groups, personality cults, and of late, the rise of Islam, with them being sworn enemies of Israel.
The Second Arab Awakening began in 2012 with event of a street vendor, constantly harassed by the police, setting himself ablaze and burning to death, and this ignited a movement throughout the Arab world. Two leaders, of Egypt and Tunisia, were ousted, and protests were held all over the Middle East. In Syria, there are battles to overthrow Assad, that continue to this day. Even in Iran, many rose up again President Amadinijad. He didn't run again, and was succeeded by one claims to be more moderate. After 30 years, a new generation is tiring of the Islamic movement and "Islam is the answer."
The reason for all this is that Islam, along with even the secular governments, haven't been providing for the needs of the people. Instead there is poverty, starvation, repression of certain religions and ethnic groups, and personality cults, with one man continuing to rule for decades.
The oil producing states are not much better. They do give oil money to everyone to keep them quiet, with no incentives to educate themselves or to work, thus leaving the rulers in power to do what they like. "No taxation and no representation."
Note that in the newspapers today, much of the youth is revolting against the values of their parents, and are turning out to be right.
What many are fighting for now, strange as this may sound to the rest of the world, are democracy, rotation of power, free and democratic elections, economic freedom, and above all, pluralism. This means that all ethnic groups, tribes, and religions, in any country, are to be accepted equally. Should one turn to Islam, or any sect of it, or decide to leave Islam for either another religion, or even be of no religion, that should be his right to do so. Many are also advocating for the equality of women.
This paragraph may seem too ideal, or like pie in the sky, but many religionists and intellectuals in the Middle East are advocating just that. This author stresses this in the entire book, and points out the sources, and the reasons for doing so.
Much of this is happening right now. A recent article in The New York Times tells of a Jewish couple living in Iran, the husband being a doctor at a local hospital. His wife decided to emigrate to the United States, but the husband stayed in Iran. He stated that Iran is his home, and even though he is Jewish, he is also an Iranian. This doctor is also doing quite well as an upstanding citizen in his community, so this is pluralism in action.
I myself first seen the author himself give a presentation in Washington that was televised on C-Span. I saw the TV presentation.
Muasher also points out that this is Israel's opportunity, also, to finally make peace with the Palestinians, either by a two-state solution, and gives some ideas here, or even a one-state solution, a bi-national state.
I myself have suggested that we redraw the entire Middle Eastern map along sectarian lines. i.e. Sunniland, Shiiteland, Kurdistan, etc. but this could make the present problem worse. Though everyone would have their own country, they would treat it like a turf war, with perpetual wars against each other. The best would be to leave the map as is, establishing pluralistic societies, with tolerance towards each other. I do favor an independent Kurdistan and Palestine, however, with all nations recognizing Israel and their right to defensible borders.
All parties must also be included to rule in a democratic country, be they Islam, Coptic, or Secular parties. No one can be excluded.
This is happening, but the Second Arab Awakening isn't happening fast enough to satisfy many people. What many don't realize is that this is not going to happen overnight. Many despots will remain in power for a long time to come, and persecutions will continue, but these tyrants will not last. Look what happened to Gaddafi, Mubarak, and what is happening to Assad.
People must be educated. The economy must improve, and it can be. Movements need outside support, both morally and financially. Most of all, we must be patient, for this may take one or two generations, but the younger segment is demanding all this to happen. All they need is to sit down and talk with others, and eventually, get elected and practice what they've preached.
Israel and the Jews must be in on this too, and Israel must take up this golden opportunity to finally make peace with the rest of the Middle East, for this chance may never come again.

The first comprehensive history of the Nazi concentration camps

In a landmark work of history, Nikolaus Wachsmann offers an unprecedented, integrated account of the Nazi concentration camps from their inception in 1933 through their demise, seventy years ago, in the spring of 1945. The Third Reich has been studied in more depth than virtually any other period in history, and yet until now there has been no history of the camp system that tells the full story of its broad development and the everyday experiences of its inhabitants, both perpetrators and victims, and all those living in what Primo Levi called "the gray zone."

In KL, Wachsmann fills this glaring gap in our understanding. He not only synthesizes a new generation of scholarly work, much of it untranslated and unknown outside of Germany, but also presents startling revelations, based on many years of archival research, about the functioning and scope of the camp system. Examining, close up, life and death inside the camps, and adopting a wider lens to show how the camp system was shaped by changing political, legal, social, economic, and military forces, Wachsmann produces a unified picture of the Nazi regime and its camps that we have never seen before.

A boldly ambitious work of deep importance, KL is destined to be a classic in the history of the twentieth century.

Review

“[A] monumental study . . . a work of prodigious scholarship . . .with agonizing human texture and extraordinary detail . . . Wachsmann makes the unimaginable palpable. That is his great achievement.” ―Roger Cohen, The New York Times Book Review

“[An] impressive and authoritative new study . . . [a] gripping, humane, and beautifully written narrative.” ―Richard Evans, The New York Review of Books

“KL is a definitive history . . . Mr. Wachsmann's most impressive achievement in this synthetic work is his portraits of individual human beings. It takes hard effort to assemble enough sources on inmates or SS men to sustain them as characters in a book of this length. The prisoners had a range of references to describe their ordeals, from the Book of Exodus through Dante's Inferno. In the generations since, their experience has become one of our points of reference in moral discussions, and it is all the more gratifying to see the camp inmates portrayed here with unvarnished humanity. Mr. Wachsmann has in effect united the best of the German and the British schools of grand World War II history: hugely but humbly exhaustive research with attention to character and to detailed narrative.” ―Timothy Snyder, The Wall Street Journal

“This is history writing of the highest order, and KL is surely one of the outstanding books written on the Third Reich in the past decade. Its author, Nikolaus Wachsmann, a professor of history at Birkbeck College, London, succeeds brilliantly in telling us much we did not know about what might seem like one of the most familiar phenomena of the Third Reich . . . What we have lacked all this time is a synoptic analysis of the development and character of the entire Nazi camp system. Now we have it and it will not need to be done again. In fact, anyone seriously interested in the Third Reich should read this book.” ―Mark Mazower, Financial Times

“Magisterial” ―Thomas Laqueur, London Review of Books

“[A] superb book . . . essential, profoundly sobering . . . It is difficult to imagine a more powerfully instructive telling of this painful story, and it will certainly be a long time before this masterly account is superseded.” ―Janet Caplan, The Times Literary Supplement

“Deeply researched, groundbreaking history.” ―Adam Kirsch, The New Yorker

“While Wachsmann holds himself to highest standards of scholarship, he is also a gifted author whose eye frequently falls on the telling or surprising detail, which makes KL not only an important work of history, but also, even at 865 pages in length, a rich and highly readable book, full of incident and irony.” ―Jonathan Kirsch, Jewish Journal

“Brilliant . . . Wachsmann writes fluently and stylishly . . . even on the harrowing subject of concentration camps, his work is eminently readable . . . [KL] is the first comprehensive study of the camps, based on mastery of a huge literature and stupendous research in many parts of the world. Its value lies in no small measure in the way it weaves together the history both of the perpetrators and of the victims . . . The value of the book transcends its own topic, centrally important though that is. It offers, in fact, a corrective to recent trends of interpretation of the Third Reich.” ―Sir Ian Kershaw, The Telegraph (UK)

“This book is a remarkable achievement. Nikolaus Wachsmann has written the first integrated history of Nazi concentration camps, unifying in a single narrative the policies and measures governing the inception and growth of the system, the context in which the monstrous KL developed and how each of its stages and facets was recorded and remembered by its victims. The study is essential for a further understanding of the Third Reich.” ―Saul Friedlander, author of The Years of Extermination: Nazi Germany and the Jews, 1939-1945 (winner of the Pulitzer Prize)

“Nikolaus Wachsmann has written an admirable historical overview of the Nazi concentration camps, effectively combining decades of recent scholarship with his own original research. He captures both the trajectory of dynamic change through which the camp system evolved as well as the experiences and agency--however limited--of the prisoner community. This is an impressive and valuable book.” ―Christopher R. Browning, author of Ordinary Men: Reserve Police Battalion 101 and the Final Solution in Poland

“It is hard to imagine that Nikolaus Wachsmann's superb book, surely to become the standard work on Nazi concentration camps, will ever be surpassed. Based on a huge array of widely scattered sources, it is a gripping as well as comprehensive and authoritative study of this grim but highly important topic.” ―Sir Ian Kershaw, author of The End: The Defiance and Destruction of Hitler's Germany, 1944 – 1945

“This is the fullest and most comprehensive history of the Nazi concentration camps in any language: a magnificent feat of research, full of arresting detail and cogent analysis, readable as well as authoritative: an extraordinary achievement that will immediately take its place as the standard work on the subject.” ―Sir Richard J Evans, author of The Third Reich at War

“[I]f a bookshelf has room for only one history of the Holocaust, this is a strong contender for that space.” ―Stephanie Shapiro, The Buffalo News

“[A] comprehensive and ground-clearing work of research and a wrenching work of narrative. It's gruesome reading, but you're in masterful hands the entire time.” ―Steve Donoghue, Open Letters Monthly

“Nikolaus Wachsmann... delivers a comprehensive history of an unendurable subject. ...[He] has absorbed an enormous amount of recent research on the KL. From this mountain of material he has crafted a fluent and gripping history.” ―David Mikics, Tablet Magazine

“Wachsmann's meticulously detailed history is essential for many reasons, not the least of which is his careful documentation of Nazi Germany's descent from greater to even greater madness. To the persistent question, "How did it happen?," Wachsmann supplies voluminous answers.” ―Earl Pike, Cleveland Plain Dealer

“Monumentally impressive . . . seems certain to become the definitive history of the Nazi concentration camps . . . his scholarship brings new life to a familiar subject.” ―Dominic Sandbrook, Sunday Times (UK)

“Profoundly important . . . exceptional . . . will surely become the standard work on the subject.” ―Laurence Rees, The Irish Mail on Sunday

“A remarkable feat . . . readable, accessible . . . KL represents the acme of what the historical discipline can achieve.” ―Dan Stone, BBC History Magazine

“[A] magnificent work of scholarship . . . every page of Nikolaus Wachsmann's magisterial account is suffused with humanity.” ―David Cesarani, Literary Review (UK)

“Wachsmann's exhaustive study will be seen as the authoritative work on the subject.” ―Publishers Weekly, starred review

“A harrowing, thorough study of the Nazi camps . . . A comprehensive, encyclopedic work that should be included in the collections of libraries, schools and other institutions.” ―Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

A scholarly and groundbreaking work
By Ash Jogalekar
This book is unlikely to be surpassed. It documents for the first time the complete and comprehensive history of the Nazi concentration and extermination camp system from 1933-1945. In the process it clears up some misunderstood beliefs and showcases how the Nazi march toward the Holocaust was based on a continuum rather than an overnight momentous decision.

Wachsmann demonstrates how the first concentration camps - ramshackle holding cells really - were set up in 1933 after Hitler came to power. The purpose of these camps was to intimidate and silence all kinds of opponents, from vagabonds and Communists to drunks and Jews. Targeting only Jews was not the purpose of these camps.

The camps subsided for a few years after 1933 but were rekindled in the late 30s after Hitler, Himmler and others set their plan for a 'Master Order' based on race in effect. Jews, gypsies and homosexuals started to be specifically targeted after 1938, although even then until 1941 or so the main plan was intimidation, financial extortion and forced migration.

It was only in 1942 that the plan turned toward extermination; the Wannsee conference was an important touchstone (although again not the most important or the only one). But even here, the methods for extermination were based on older ones. Killing by gas was a legacy of the horrific T-4 euthanasia program of the 30s. Wachsmann also reminds us that the Holocaust did not suddenly start with the gas chambers but was initiated by the SS Einsatzgruppen killing squads in the Ukraine and the Soviet Union. Also, the first casualties of many of the camps were not Jews but Soviet POWs. Another book that details this background very well is Richard Rhodes's "Masters of Death".

The book also demolishes some myths. One myth of course is the belief that the Holocaust somehow sprang fully from someone's head or signature or from a single conference in 1942. As the book demonstrates, this is not true and the whole program grew out of an escalation of historical acts from the 1930s onwards, sometimes through accidents and fits and starts. The other myth the book addresses is of Auschwitz somehow being the most gruesome emblematic symbol of the Holocaust. As terrible as Auschwitz was, the book makes it clear that unlike Auschwitz, four other camps (Treblinka, Sobibor, Belzec and Chelmno) were dedicated exclusively to extermination. Auschwitz was also a labor camp; this fact was valuable because it allowed many survivors to escape and tell their stories. However an unintended side effect of their unforgettable testimony is the belief that Auschwitz stood for everything the Holocaust stood for. As the book documents in great detail, reality was more complicated.

Wachsmann talks about all of this as well as the mind numbing bureaucracy that permeates even an unimaginable atrocity like the Holocaust at great length. Yet the prose in this 800 page volume is remarkably readable, partly because somehow Wachsmann still finds space to focus on individual personalities, from the infamous to the mundane. He never lets us forget that the Holocaust was perpetrated by many ordinary people, and this remains perhaps the most disturbing fact of all. This is quite definitely the most panoramic, nuanced and authoritative view published until now, not just of the camps per se but of their historical evolution. Painful and gut-wrenching to read in many places, but a necessary and very valuable contribution even to the mountain of literature that exists about the Third Reich.

Excellent history of the Nazi concentration camps
By JEDCJT
As its title suggests, the book chronicles the formation, expansion, and entrenchment of the Nazi concentration camps (known as the Konzentrationslager, KL), from its haphazard beginnings in 1933 to its ignominious end in 1945. As Wachsmann reveals, the KL played a central, if not pivotal, role in the consolidation of the 'Thousand-Year Reich' following the Nazi seizure of power in 1933. From the beginning, a growing number of citizens found themselves incarcerated in the newly formed camps on virtue of their political orientation (mainly Communists) and their race, ethnicity, and religion (Jews, among others the Nazis deemed 'inferior') -- and these numbers would continue to expand from hundreds to tens of thousands, and more so during the Second World War. Interestingly, at least in the beginning, the KL was by no means guaranteed to become a permanent fixture of the Nazi regime; the legal judicial authorities increasingly lambasted the KL not least because they had the potential to tarnish Germany's international image. Were it not for Hitler's decisive intervention, the KL would have faded away sometimes in the mid- to late 1930s. This was not to happen, of course, and under the supervision of the ever-ambitious Himmler and other officials such as Theodor Eicke (who headed Dachau, the first concentration camp set up under the Nazis, and who would reorganize the KL system on a large scale), the KL would play an increasingly lethal role in the Nazi machine of repression. (According to the author, the lethality of the KL was such to an extent that its prisoners were more likely to perish there -- especially during the war -- than their Soviet counterparts in the Gulag). I found this to be a very fascinating, if distressing, subject, and I believe that readers will come away from this book with an increased understanding, if not appreciation, of a relatively little-explored topic in the history of Nazi Germany.

An evolutionary history
By Maine Colonial
This is an excellent overview of the vast KL system and its history from the 1930s through the end of World War II. Wachsmann's writing is particularly lucid, with a very readable mix of anecdotal and archival/statistical documentation.

The largely chronological organization helps reveal the evolution of the camps. It's easy to have just one picture of how the KL worked, but Wachsmann does a fine job showing how the camps not only had different purposes from each other, but that the purposes and methods of operation changed over time. One example he explores is how the work camps became statistically less deadly in 1943, in response to Himmler's orders to make prisoners more of a labor resource to outside industry.

Another particular strength is Wachsmann's showing how Nazi ideology swayed--and sometimes very far--to serve war expedients and the ambitions of commandants and their superiors. He enlivens his work by illustrating his conclusions with examples of particular individuals, both well-known historical figures and numerous people whose fate was to be swept into the brutal world of the camps.

Wachsmann tackles some of the conventional wisdom about the camps and the prisoners (such as that all kapos were sadists, that prisoners became completely dehumanized, that women formed close bonds but men didn't), presents his views and reasons for his conclusions. Wachsmann has a clear-eyed, pragmatic and logical style. He is no prisoner of ideology in his approach.

Along with another stellar recent work, Sarah Helm's Ravensbruck: Life and Death in Hitler's Concentration Camp for Women, this will be a resource for years to come.

A Slow Death: 83 Days of Radiation SicknessFrom Vertical

Japan's worst nuclear radiation accident took place at a uranium reprocessing facility in Tokaimura, northeast of Tokyo, on 30 September 1999. The direct cause of the accident was cited as the depositing of a uranyl nitrate solution--containing about 16.6 kg of uranium, which exceeded the critical mass--into a precipitation tank. Three workers were exposed to extreme doses of radiation.

Hiroshi Ouchi, one of these workers, was transferred to the University of Tokyo Hospital Emergency Room, three days after the accident. Dr. Maekawa and his staff initially thought that Ouchi looked relatively well for a person exposed to such radiation levels. He could talk, and only his right hand was a little swollen with redness. However, his condition gradually weakened as the radioactivity broke down the chromosomes in his cells.

The doctors were at a loss as to what to do. There were very few precedents and proven medical treatments for the victims of radiation poisoning. Less than 20 nuclear accidents had occurred in the world to that point, and most of those happened 30 years ago. This book documents the following 83 days of treatment until his passing, with detailed descriptions and explanations of the radiation poisoning.

Review
“Stylistically resembling a fictional narrative, this grim chronicle of Ouchi’s deterioration demonstrates the humanity and pyschology of the medical profession in extreme situations. In that sense, it᾿s an interesting companion to [Osamu Tezuka’s] Black Jack manga. Think of it as such a nightmarish episode of House that as a result of watching it you resolve never to tune into the series again.”
—Firefox News

“Harnessing the atom’s energy can help, even save, mankind or lead to its destruction. This is the sad, cautionary tale of things gone awry, a noble effort by Japanese physicians to save Mr. Ouchi’s life and of our limited ability to deal with the consequences of mistakes in this arena.”
—Robert Peter Gale, M.D., Ph.D., D.Sc., F.A.C.P. (Hon),
UCLA Medical Center

“Radiation injuries are potentially complex, often involving a combination of different types of radiation energy. The Tokaimura accident reminds us of these complexities as well as the importance of accurate information flow from the site of the incident to the healthcare provideer in the hospital. New knowledge was gained regarding optimal management of acute radiation toxicity.”
—Nicholas Dainiak, M.D., F.A.C.P. Yale University School of Medicine

The Day After, indeed...
By Her Majesty, the Empress Eugenie
There can be no spoiler alert here, as the title tells you the end of the story. Also, the vibrant yellow blocks on the book cover gradually turn a sickly green. The 83rd block is black. Goodbye.

I read "A Slow Death" in two hours and have been disturbed about it ever since. Despite the efforts of some of the world's most talented and compassionate medical professionals, Mr. Ouchi was doomed from the blue flash. This book describes the hope of success and the grim progression of the inevitable. Intricate medical procedures and nuclear physics were explained in a way that did not bore or confuse me, and did not cause me to lose sight of the humanity of the suffering patient.

After watching some Cold War movies I was interested in learning about what happened to people who were exposed to high levels of radiation. In the movies people grew pale, threw up a lot, and died; I knew that couldn't be the entire story. Radiation Sickness is described on the internet as including things like vomiting, hair loss, skin hemorrhages, bleeding, loss of white blood cells, pain, delirium and often death, but that seemed vague. This book, however, explained in detail how these symptoms (and several unexpected others) actually played out in the life of a thirty-five year old husband and father. Afterwards I felt a little guilty for reading it and peering into the window of such agony just to satisfy my curiosity.

The gentle and amiable patient did not realize for several days that he was what is termed a "walking ghost". While he appeared to be fine for a while, all of his cells were damaged and his death was certain. Pain medication to make him comfortable when symptoms arose would have ordinarily been the only intervention while awaiting the inevitable, but in his case the hospital staff and his family did not tell him that he received a lethal dose and maintained that fiction almost until the day he died. The doctors kept giving him transplants, transfusions, skin grafts, injections and cardiac massage -- a heroic effort overall -- to keep him alive until maybe something would actually help. Since severe radiation sickness is not common, these folks had no real idea what they could do and dealt with symptoms as they arose. And arose. And arose. The fact that Mr. Ouchi survived for months is nothing short of amazing, but perhaps honor and hope came at too high a cost: his incomprehensible CONSCIOUS suffering.

Despite the horrific subject, the book was engaging. I came to care about all of the real people involved. I think I learned a lot. I'm glad I read it, and intend to read it again more slowly.

In the end, only the heart tissue was left intact.
By Amazon Customer
This is a book about a man named Ouchi whose chromosomes were destroyed by a blast of neutron rays while working in unsafe conditions in a uranium processing facility. For 83 days, a crack team of doctors, nurses, and medical experts from several countries try to keep him alive. Because Ouchi's chromosomes have been destroyed, his body cannot generate new cells to replace the dead ones. His skin falls off. His mucus membranes disappear. He is in constant pain. He suffers massive internal hemorrhages and the medical staff have to constantly pump fluids and nutrients into his body to keep him alive. His organs fail, one by one, and their functions are taken over by various medical apparatus. At various points, Ouchi's doctors and nurses question whether or not what they are doing is the right thing to do. That is to say, are they actually helping him, or are they just endlessly prolonging his agony?

This is a slim but tough book.It goes into gruesome but necessary detail about the deterioration of a human body afflicted by neutron beam radiation. It is told in a straightforward reportorial style that goes into thoroughgoing technical detail but not so much that the average reader cannot follow along. It also gives space to the emotional turmoil the medical staff underwent as they battled to keep Ouchi alive.

In some ways, this is a book about the dangers of atomic radiation, but it is also a strange kind of existential novel where the main character's mental state is largely unknown at the height of his suffering. Ouchi was under heavy sedation for much of his sickness and he was unable to communicate in any detail what his thoughts and feelings were. The book seems to suggest that had he been awake his suffering would've been monstrous. The medical staff did what they thought was best even in the face of a hopeless situation.

This is harsh story taken from real life and told in harrowing but necessary detail.

83 Days, read in about three...
By Mike Fitz
This was always going to be a tough read but a compelling one as well, and that was how it turned out - I could scarcely put it down and it was gone in just a few hours read time, even though I already knew a lot about this and other similar cases. The disturbing discussion of this poor guy's irradiation and subsequent inevitable death will be tough reading for some, but the author sticks to medical fact for the most part and we are spared some of the more emotionally harrowing stuff that no doubt unfolded. I think what sticks with me is the incredible naivety of these nuclear workers. For the irradiated man to ask after his skin had started to fall off "will I get leukemia from this" or words to that effect was profoundly disturbing, such was their lack of understanding about what they were doing or the forces they were playing with. Ultimately I wanted to find out who was held responsible for this terrible accident and what what happened to them, but the scope of the book perhaps didn't allow for this. All in all, this was a great read and will fascinate anyone who wants to uncover more about these highly unusual radiological incidents. An excellent read.

Great info, Kindle format not so great
By Daniel Johnson
As the principal author of this book, I highly recommend it. But the conversion to Kindle leaves a lot to be desired. I guess it wasn't designed with graphics-heavy publications in mind, which this book is. A better alternative is to purchase it directly from our publisher, Cedar Fort. They will e-mail you a PDF, which looks perfect, and can be viewed on any device. Also, you'll be able to zoom in to see more detail in the photos and graphics.

Helpful information on the Yucatan!
By Susan A. Roylance
Good information, interesting pictures, and an enjoyable narrative as they travel the roads and visit the sites of the Yucatan. The kindle version on the PC was better than on my Kindle. Excellent graphics on the higher resolution version.
