About the Author

Kief Morris has been designing, building, and running automated IT server infrastructure for nearly twenty years, having started out with shell scripts and Perl, moving on to CFengine, Puppet, Chef, and Ansible among other technologies as they’ve emerged. He is the head of ThoughtWorks’ European practice for Continuous Delivery and DevOps, helping clients find more effective ways of building and managing infrastructure operations.

Solid Attempt To Define The Cloud

Infrastructure as Code shows modern techniques to use the cloud. The beginning chapters detailed the differences between the "Iron Age" of infrastructure and newer cloud based methods. Scripts are shown often to show how you would actually setup some cloud based instances. The author has a preference for Ruby and AWS.

The middle portions of the book look at design patterns related to the cloud. Often "anti-patterns" are explored as well to show what not to do. Templating servers and configuration management is detailed.

Part III of the book was basically a summary of DevOps. I found the information to be too general here, and sometimes not that relevant to Infrastructure. To give an example, the author discusses Code Reviews where he says: "All too often, code reviewing becomes a wasteful activity that doesn't lead to improvements actually being made to code. Pair programming is more rigorous, with input from two people leading to better design and improvements made in real time."

The author often states opinions like this, but does not back them up by anything but his opinion. There was no evidence provided to show that code reviews are wasteful, while pair programming boosts productivity. Maybe this has been the case for the author, but I would have liked to seen more evidence for a lot of his claims. A lot of the asides in the book were taken from the author's personal experiences and used to prove something.

I found the stronger parts of the book where the author shows configurations and details. Parts in which the author relied on personal experiences and generalizations were not as good. Overall though, this was an informative book that is helping define the new rules for cloud based architectures.

Extremely helpful resource in which to master IaC practices

Many organizations have entered the world of cloud services, only to find it is not the panacea that they were lead to believe it would be.

For example, while it’s relatively easy to spin up new servers in AWS (Amazon Web Services), managing those servers once they are operational is not such an easy endeavor.

In Infrastructure as Code: Managing Servers in the Cloud (O'Reilly Media ISBN-10: 1491924357), author Kief Morris has written an extremely useful book detailing how to effectively manage and gain control over your cloud infrastructure.

As Morris writes, the ease of which cloud services can be deployed (far too often with lack of design or strategy), leads to the predicament where the mass amount of cloud vendors are simply unmanageable.

As to infrastructure as code (IaC); it is the process of managing and provisioning servers and their configuration via definition files, rather than physical hardware configuration or the use of configuration management tools. The rise of IaaS has led to the widespread use of IaC.

Morris notes that IaC is also an approach to infrastructure automation based on practices from software development. It emphasizes consistent, repeatable routines for provisioning and changing system and their configurations. Changes are made to definitions and then rolled out to systems through unattended processes.

This is a highly technical reference, and in the books 15 chapter Morris details the use of innumerable tools and techniques.

The only lacking in the book is the scant coverage around security, which only is 9 pages in chapter 14.

Aside from that, Infrastructure as Code: Managing Servers in the Cloud is an extraordinary good reference to help any cloud services manager start to gain control over their cloud infrastructure.

Outstanding explanation personality types in spiritual terms

This book presents an outstanding understanding of the personality types including psychosocial development. It correlates Jungian personality types (and Meyers-Briggs Type Indicators) to a spiritual and biblical context to help us in our journey toward wholeness. This is an excellent resource for personal growth as well as retreat material. I am a psychotherapist and a spiritual director. I have used it for many years with my directees to help them better understand themselves in relationship to God, scripture, and their spiritual growth.

This book should prove to anyone familiar with MBTI that Jesus is the complete God and perfect man! He embodies all four of the major functions: Thinking, Feeling, Sensing and Intuiting. If you study the Bible further, you will realize that He's also the perfect balance between Extraversion and Introversion, as well as Perceiving and Judging. What a wonderful Shepherd we have: surely only He can relate to all of our personality types!

TRUE Sidney Sheldon feel!!

I was so sad when Sidney Sheldon died, not only for his family, but for all of his readers. I started reading him back in the early 70's with his book Other Side of Midnight, and every time he had a new one out, I couldn't wait to buy it. Years later I realized Other Side was NOT his first book but Naked Face was. I enjoyed that also, but nothing got me hooked like that first book Other Side of Midnight. I have enjoyed all his other books (or so I thought) and while I am a VERY slow reader and not enough time.. I would finish his books WAY too soon!!!

When I noticed this book offered for 2.99, I thought, no there must be a mistake..he couldn't have written that.. then noticed the name Tilly Bagshwe listed as other author. Confused, but started reading, then was REALLY confused. This is SIDNEY SHELDON!!! As far as I could tell, I guess they found some unpublished transcripts and along with Tilly published them. You won't be disappointed!! My only sadness in this is that once the transcripts are done with.. well, won't think about that.. have to go search for any OTHER books!!!

A good lesson on how not to bottle up bad memories - they eat away at you like cancer!!

I have always enjoyed Sidney Sheldon's books. I have read most of them when Mr Sheldon was alive and those that Tilly Bagshawe has written.
However I find foul language unacceptable and not necessary. This is one of the main reasons that will give me pause when considering another book.

The storyline is very good with a nice little twist at the end. We all know that bad language is more prevalent in todays society than say twenty or thirty years ago. But what are we teaching the youth who come after us as prospective writers. Despite all of that, I enjoyed the characters in the book. Alexia is a strong women, many of us can see her mirrored in todays women in Parliament. Terry is a typical upper crust Brit who doesn't have a clue about the real world. Fans of Mr Sheldon will enjoy this book and hopefully more writers will come forward with this type of talent.

Sadly, it has become common that when a famous and prolific author passes on, the family comission a new author to continue the series. Often it doesn't work well; I mean, how can it? Those authors acheived that level of readership and success because they were who they were. There are exceptions, of course. Ace Atkins is doing an amazing and well-received job with Robert Parker's Spencer series. And Tilly Bagshawe is astounding as the continuer of Sidney Sheldon's Memories of... series.

In Tides of Memory, Bagshawe once again takes on an epic story, full of sex, family mishaps, governmental interference, etc.... the stuff of legend for Sheldon. He has been referred to as the creator of the Romance/Thriller category and, as such, there is no one better to carry on the torch than Bagshawe who's own successes in both fields justifies the decision.

This story also reminds me of another great epic family author, namely Jeffrey Archer. Storylines and plots are similar, endings equally fulfilling. If you're a fan of Archer, or even the latest tomes from Ken Follett, then you should definitely pick up a copy of any of Bagshawe's works on behalf of Sidney Sheldon.

a must read!!!

Phillipa a lil 12 yr old girl goes to heaven again (this is her second book) where she is given many end time revelations. Jesus comes to this child and takes her to heaven he shows her mansion and things he has prepared for the saints, things such as are favorite foods, anything we desire like different colors or having your house painted gold. Her mansion and the way she describes it is a dream you would have to get the book and see for urself. There are special gifts waiting and he lavious this little girl because of her dedication to him and sharing the gospel and spreading the divine end time revelations. There are many surprises, fine things beyond ure imagination and the way she describes the joy and love and peace and her enthusium. Most of all she expresses how much Jesus loves us.

You guys Jesus is handsome she says he is beyond compare I always wonder how he looked which was conforting altho if he wasnt handsome it wouldnt mean I wouldnt love him because, he died for us but it was just something interesting to know. He is so loving and really delicate and sweet towards her I see why the mysterious are hidden from un child like people. There are animals up there and they talk and that heaven is so wonderful that even the animals said to do the best you can to make it up there and Phillipa said even the floor in heaven is better to be on than on the earth! I was like wow it is making me wish to be just even on the ground in heaven let alone just being with Jesus. The way she goes to heaven in chariots, by angles and how the angles are always surrounded by her and the love Jesus has.. The food is prepared for us the way we want it in our heavenly refridgator shows how close it is for the coming rapture. Also you get a laptop up there and will be able to chat, it just makes me wonder what else all is up there and how gracious God is. Its a must read

A WONDERFUL BOOK FOR BOTH CHRISTIANS NON CHRISTIANS

AFTER READING THIS BOOK, I HAVE COME TO AGREE THE MORE WITH THE APOSTLE PAUL THAT,OUR PRESENT SUFFERINGS IS NOTHING TO BE COMPARED WITH WHAT AWAIT US IN HEAVEN (ROMANS 8:18). SO MY DEAR BRETHREN, AS YOU READ THIS BOOK MAKE EVERY EFFORT NOT TO MISS THIS WONDERFUL PLACE CALLED HEAVEN. THANK YOU.
