An inspiring book that teaches a valuable lesson for everyone - not just business people

This book differs from many others on the Three Principles (called Insight Principles by the authors) in that it draws many of its stories from the business world. The book is very readable and it is easy to read quite quickly. I would urge you to take the authors' advice and pause as you read and reflect on how what you are reading applies in your life. I found that did indeed lead to insights of my own. The Three Principles are simple to understand but really seeing them for yourself is why you want to reflect and make the understanding your own.

If you know nothing about the Three Principles this book is suitable for you as it explains them very clearly. If you already know about the Principles then this book gives some great material upon which to reflect. In my case, already knowing the Principles, I saw something deeper and it was a big Ah ha moment. I will be rereading the book again.

Elegantly simple, balanced, clear and practical...

So far, this is the clearest and simplest book about the Three Principles (called here Insight Principles) that I've read. It's ostensibly aimed at the corporate/business world and the corporate/business reader, and it certainly suits that reader base, but it's a much broader book than that. Someone who 'gets' it in their business life may be surprised to find that what is taught here applies to their home and relational lives as well. The authors have done a good job taking material that could initially seem fuzzy or general and showing how it can be used in what 'practical' people like to call 'the real world.' The writing is clear, simple, understandable, and illustrated with real world anecdotes drawn from their personal and professional experience, as well as from the experiences of their clients. One could read this book with a clear, relaxed mind and get a lot out of it on its own, and I think the impact would be trebled in situations where one reads the book in conjunction with a training or coaching program based on the Principles.

Our mind creates our realities

I have been exposed to the "three principles" for more than two decades. Years ago I sponsored training my company's employees with remarkable results. Since then I have sponsored training for my City's management team and more than a dozen non-profits with similar results. I watched as a friend of mine provided this training for a local State prison that dramatically resulted in changing lives of both the inmates and the staff. Prisoners serving time for drug offenses went home to new, drug free lives and never returned. When competent trainers expose people to these ideas, lives change, both inside organizations and in employees homes. But other than providing funds for group training, explaining the Principles has been challenging. Regrettably these powerful ideas are easiest to grasp in a live group format. This book changes that. The authors have structured a book that leads the reader through the explanation of how our minds work in relaxed, easy to understand language that a reader can digest at a comfortable pace. I am grateful, and have already begun gifting the book to family and friends.

Yet the earlier rivalry continued: Henry Fielding held the line against idealism, defending the comic tradition with its flawed characters, while Charlotte Bront� and George Eliot offered a rejoinder to social realism with their idealized vision of strong, generous, and sensitive women. In the twentieth century, modernists like Proust and Joyce sought to move beyond this conflict and capture the enigmatic workings of the psyche.

Pavel concludes his compelling account by showing how the old tensions persist even within today's pluralism, as popular novels about heroes coexist with a wealth of other kinds of works, from satire to social and psychological realism.

A history of the novel that's more than a history of the novel.

I found this book to be a fascinating history of the novel. Describing it with the word "history" needs some qualification, however, because it isn't simply a catalog of notable books, laid out in the chronological order of their publication. As author Thomas Pavel says in his Introduction, "Rather than providing a complete inventory of authors and titles, this book aims to describe the major types of novel and the forces that have shaped their history."

This focus on "the major types of novel" is what makes this book uniquely interesting. There have been many such types, with different ones being dominant at different times in history: the chivalric romance, the picaresque, the satire, the gothic novel, and many more. Generally speaking, early novels were largely concerned with promoting ideals of human behavior, either by portraying characters of exemplary perfection, or with characters whose flaws and failings were lampooned. One of the general trends running through the history of the novel is a movement away from these ideal-promoting novels and towards those that observed characters and the world with greater realism and attention to the details of life. But Pavel doesn't try to impose any single theory or "illuminating concept" on the history of the novel. Rather he portrays that history as multi-threaded, with many different themes and approaches to story-telling rising and falling throughout history, perhaps becoming dominant at various times and places, but with many different types of novel often existing at the same point in time. To quote one representative passage from the book, in which he notes that the novel seemed to have arrived at a kind of "maturity" late in the 19th century:

"At the end of the nineteenth century, the novel appeared to have reached full maturity. In its various forms, it could portray complex human beings whose development and actions did not merely illustrate a preestablished set of norms and values. Writers knew how to connect these characters, their thoughts, and their deeds to a plausible social and historical environment. They reflected on the various ways in which love and couple formation succeeds or fails. And most of them used clear, comprehensible language, meant to reach a large group of educated readers. These achievements -- social realism, complex characters, nuanced reflections on love, and accessibility -- were in no danger of forcing writers into a uniform mold. Victor Hugo, Alessandro Manzoni, Dickens, and the popular novelists defended an idealized view of humanity, while Stendhal, Thackeray, and Anthony Trollope ironically exposed human imperfection. The moral optimism of George Eliot and Tolstoy, Flaubert's mixture of contempt and indulgence, the Goncourts' and Zola's dismal view of human nature, Dostoevsky's rejection of autonomy, Fontane's serenity, Thomas Hardy's earnestness, the enlightened despair of Eca de Queiros, Benito Perez Galdos, and Boleslaw Prus -- they were all flourishing within the same literary framework."

In presenting this complex history of the ebb and flow of novelistic themes, Pavel discusses a selection of influential books and authors at the various stages in that history. Many of these discussions are detailed and insightful, and stand as excellent examples of literary criticism in their own right. Throughout the book, Pavel's writing is clear, engaging, and refreshingly free of obscure academic jargon or esoteric theorizing.

This will be an engrossing and even essential book for anyone interested in the history of the novel. But it should also be read by those who never considered themselves interested in that history. The novel, of course, is not merely a form of entertainment. It is through the novel that human beings have applied some of their deepest thought into how people think and feel and behave, how the individual relates to society at large, into love and all the other high and low emotions, into what it means to be alive and human. The history of the novel, especially when approached as Thomas Pavel has in this book, is a history of human thought about humanity.

NOT ENOUGH DEPTH

Disappointed. Thought it would incorporate more autobiographical or biographical depth of the man and add a more personal view or discussion of lyrics- like the poetry they are-what they mean or could mean based on Mr. Cohen's life experience. I know when I hear Leonard Cohen's lyrics, I WANT to know what, where, and why he used THOSE words or phrases...while my mind conjures up images of a person in those situations. This seemed more a review of works ie acknowledging for many works, Mr. Cohen's favorite theme of love. I think that is a GIVEN....and relatively superficial. I do not think Mr. Ratcliff presented much of the mystique that is Leonard Cohen. Good title which is what motivated me to buy it....but no underlying content.

The legend at his best!!

A very interesting and informative biography of one of the best writers ever to come out of Canada. I have been a fan of this literary genius, ever since I read Selected poems, and I have every song he ever recorded. Leonard Cohen is one of a kind...and once he gets you under his spell, you are hooked for life. Truly a poetic and lyrical treasure. I highly recommend this book to fans and non-fans alike. You will not be disappointed.

About the Author
Martin R. de la Pena, a veterinarian and ornithologist, studies the reproduction of birds, on which he has published three books, alongside a dozen others, in his native Argentina. He has also produced several films on the life of birds. Maurice Rumboll, one of Argentina's top naturalists, directs environmental education programs for students and plans interpretive trails, brochure texts, and visitor centers for his country's National Park Administration, whose Ranger Training Institute he formerly headed. Previously he directed visitors' services and research at Iguazu National Park and served as Traveling Naturalist for the Argentine Museum of Natural History.

Good guide, but could be improved. I would recommend it.

I took an extended trip (2 months) through Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay. This book was adequate and quite useful. I wish the range maps weren't in the back of the book, it slows you down a bit. However, from what I have seen, this is probably the best book to carry if you will be traveling over a large part of the region. The pictures are pretty good, but not great. The descriptions are also pretty good, but not great. I understand some concessions had to be made in order to make it a compact field guide. Overall I think a good job was done of balancing information/size of the book. If you can get by without regional range maps then "Birds of Chile" might be the way for you to go. It is a slightly better quality guide. If you want the range maps for the entirety of South America, and you need a compact, "backpacker friendly" guide, then don't hesitate to purchase this one.

Very Portable and Useful Little Guide

I am going birding in Bolivia -- which does not yet have it's own field guide -- later this year. So instead of carrying one guide I need to figure out which combination of books will strike a balance between usefulness and space/weight. I have a feeling this is going to be one of my main resources. It is very portable and so far about 85 percent of the birds I may potentially see are in here. In no way is this book intended to replace a full scale field guide such as "Birds of Columbia" by Hilty or "Birds of the High Andes" but then again it is less than one quarter the size and weight. Also, FYI -- it is quite a bit more than merely an illustrated checklist: you do get a small one paragraph description for each bird, a range map at the back which is a little inconvenient but many full size guides use this format also. The book is probably a little out of date as far as some of the finer points of taxonomy -- but many of the recent arguments are at least explained. All in all -- I feel this will be a very useful book to have along, though it will definitely not be the only book I'll have along.

A mandatory book for South American birders

De la Pe�a & Rumboll's "Birds of Southern South America and Antarctica" is a well illustrated field book with more than 1,000 species of birds from Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, southern Brazil and southern Bolivia, plus Antarctica. Easy to use and carry in the field, one can identify any species fast, being either a male, a female or a juvenile in many cases. Illustrations from Non-Passerine birds are more accurate than Passerine birds. Each plate has the English vernacular name, the latin name and some key informations about the bird sighted as colors (male and female, whether this is the case), habitat and even vocalization in some cases. Unfortunately, the distribution maps for all species are useless and should come after the description of any bird. Despite of the maps, this book is really a good purchase, a mandatory book for South American birders.

Should've trimmed the (heavy) fat!

Here's an example of how dizzying excitement can turn into disappointment: Kraken Opus overhyped this book as such a rare piece of MJ history, constantly pushing the preorders, only to turn around and sell it at online bookstores for over $100 less! Even though I got mine for $165 (plus $30 shipping), I still could've saved about $40 had I ordered it here. Additionally, perhaps this is the regular size of an opus, but THIS was an opus that was constantly toted as a "coffee table book". This is not a coffee table book. This is a coffee table. It comes up to my knee (I'm 5'9"), and is not only heavy, but LARGE, a very uncomfortable carry. Additionally, the digital extras - the one thing I was MOST excited about - are nowhere to be found. Supposedly they're coming later. Well, supposedly this was a rare, must-have, and supposedly, it was full of never-before-seen pictures, and supposedly...you get the idea.

What goes into a 400-page, 30-lb book? Not a whole lot. Most of this is stuff that you already know: Michael came from humble Indiana roots, performed with the Jackson 5, broke away to do Off the Wall, was a genius, redefined music and dance as we know it, blah blah blah. Most of the exclusive pictures are variations of pictures that you've already seen. Or there may be a page full of pictures on one film-like sheet, most of them extremely similar, if not identical. Most disappointingly, there aren't any real "behind-the-scenes" pictures OR insight; no pics of Michael just relaxing and being Michael. Nearly all of them are MICHAEL JACKSON, the performer, but none of Mike, or MJ, or Smelly, or whatever his friends called him. There aren't even many photos of Michael the humanitarian. NO photos of him from the set of The Wiz or Captain Eo, only a few of his video shoots (and I do mean a FEW), and yet there are so many pictures of him standing on his toes in a fedora that I could scream. Speaking of Scream, one thing I was really, REALLY looking forward (other than those digital photos) were some pictures from the set of Scream, because the (few) shots in color are so beautiful. But while there are tons of pics of Michael on the set, there's only one of Michael and Janet, and they're covered in silly string. Aside from photos of his J5 days, there are virtually no pictures of his family, not even his mother or children. An entire chapter dedication to MJ's fashion sense, but not even 10 pages about his family - whom, by most accounts, he loved very much? There are lots of pictures of commissioned art pieces of Michael - most with a Peter Pan motif - and some fan art. In fact, there's probably more art than pics of all of his family combined - and that includes the Jackson 5.

One of the main reasons why I bought this opus is because I refuse to buy anything that continues to perpetuate the LIES told about MJ, but I wasn't exactly looking for little more than a walk down memory lane. The reason why we buy these thing is BECAUSE we want to know more - more about his work and his vision. What inspired him? How did he come up with so many amazing ideas, time after time? What did he think about his own work? What drove him to continue to work so hard when far lesser "legends" would've rested on their laurels? If you're going to interview a bunch of people who supposedly knew this man, tell me a little bit more than his love for practical jokes and Charlie Chaplin!

Supposedly (there's that word again) Michael was working w/Kraken Opus for this project. I seriously doubt this is what Michael actually had in mind, because as we saw with "This Is It", Michael knows what his fans want to see. I'm sure he also knew what his fans had already seen, and if there's one thing Michael would never do, it's sell the same old thing to his audience. With every page turn, I found myself growing more and more disappointed and frustrated; towards the end, I was just browsing, very relieved that I hadn't embarrassed myself by taking it to the Christmas party (full of MJ fans). If you want to read a buttload of anecdotes full of information you already know from people who may or may not have even met Michael or seen him any time this century, go for it. If you're looking for a book far too heavy to carry around that you'll probably just store under your bed, this is it. But I can honestly say, without a drop of bias, that you're better off buying a few of the well-done MJ tributes on the newsstands - tributes that are nice enough to keep on your coffee table, and practical enough to scan all those lovely photos. As for me...anybody wanna buy an opus?

The Official Michael Jackson Opus

I just finished reading MJ's Opus. What struck me was it's totally positive. Not a word about the troubles he faced. The table of contents goes right to the essence of his being. Here are the names of the chapters; Child Star, Voice, Composer, Moonwalk (discussed him as an innovator of dance), Vision (discussed how he was so incredibally progressive ), One Glove (How he used fashion to build himself into a global icon), Friend, Heart (his humanitarian efforts), Art Lover, and Global Icon. There are tons never before seen of high quality photos. There are also plenty of photos you have seen before but have more in the photo because they haven't been cropped. There are no photos that have the most important part (like MJ''s face) in the spine of the book. I only learned a few new things about MJ but what was presented was done so in a very eloquent way. My favorite contribution in the book was written by the person who won the essay contest put out by the [...] website. It's on page 393. The contest topic was "What Does Michael's Legacy Mean to You?" The 25 year old winner had a really good handle on what MJ was all about. She has a future as a writer. I also liked the fan art. I think it is what MJ would have wanted in the book. Some of the fan art isn't all that great but MJ loved his fans talented or not. Of the 26 fan art pictures, I liked about 1/2 of them. There is one I absolutely love. He is dressed like Peter Pan. He's on his toes with knees bent like the dance pose we so often see. The background is wooded with mountains in the distance. There are butterflies around his head and a blimp type airship. That artist has promise. She captured the essence of MJ. Before I read that these were fan art I thought that one was done by Giorgio or Nordahl the artists MJ had commisioned to do art work for him. The book itself weighs 16 1/2 pounds; with the case it weighs 23 pounds. I weighed it. So it does not weigh as much as they say in the media.

I can't wait to get the video reality card Opus has promised. I hope the footage is never before seen footage. Another addition that would have been nice is having the text in the book duplicated in a smaller paperback and included with the big book. It was a pain in the rear trying to read from such a huge book. I would have liked to curl up in bed and read instead of bending over a coffee table. If you want to know more about MJ's molestation charges read Redemption by Geraldine Hughes and The Michael Jackson Conspiracy by Aphrodite Jones. My heart breaks when I think what the media did to such a sweet, loving, and caring man. Until I got to know who MJ was, I did not believe in God. Now I know there has to be a God. Someone like MJ is not put on this earth by accident.

Almost Great

NEGATIVES:

1. Incorrect dates. I've noticed a few of them. 1979 is very different from 1984, right? This makes me think that either this was a very hurried effort - i.e. "Get it out there while people are still interested in his death!" or that it just wasn't proofread properly. Either way - not good. Not for hundreds of dollars - and not for what should be the most accurate, sort of encyclopedic text on the man in existence.

2. Some of the choices for testimonials are a little questionable - like they couldn't find anyone better to comment on his fashion sense than Kimora Lee Simmons?

3. Photo Quality. Most of these photos look fuzzy. You would think they would be really crisp and high resolution on this beautiful glossy paper. Some of the photos of the paintings are much too blurry to see details. In the description it says something like "There's Janet Jackson, as a fairy in the foreground" - but then you look where this fairy is, and she's pretty much just a blur.

4. The Art Lover section. I personally enjoy these paintings, and I think some of them are funny and cute, but honestly these paintings, and the testimonials from the artists don't really do much in the way of making him look anything close to sane. I guess it doesn't really matter at this point.

Common sense marketing perspective

Winning firms focus on one of three customer value disciplines: product leadership, customer intimacy, or operational excellence. Trying to be all things to everybody is tantamount to being nothing for anyone. If your firm can't get its act together, you'll find this an inspiring book that makes a compelling case that success is only possible by having the courage to focus on specific tasks & disciplines. This seems very elementary, but I've observed many firms that refused to choose what they wanted to be, ensuring that they became nothing. This book is helpful in positioning exercises.
I have two concerns about the book. 1, it doesn't need to be this long in order to get the central idea across. 2, I'm becoming increasingly convinced that this model is counterproductive in a Geoff Moore tornado period. If you're in a high-tech tornado, wait until Main Street before applying discipline.
Aside from these caveats, I still find the simple model presented in this book as being useful in analyzing market approaches. You have to understand the model in order to know when it isn't appropriate. Product Managers, sales, marketing and product development staff need to be aware of this book and its ideas.

Leadership in Execution

As the title suggests this book is about what sets leading companies apart from the average ones. According to the authors, there are three dimensions along which companies can focus on: cost, innovation, or service. Leading companies are ones that focus all their efforts and resources to excel in one of these dimensions while being average on the others. Operational excellence (cost leadership) is achieved by making the operations of the company as efficient as can be. These are companies such as WalMart that constantly find ways to reduce their Opex and pass these savings to their customers. Their customers are always looking for the lowest price. Product leadership (innovation) is achieved by continually pushing to the market place new products. These are companies such as Intel which constantly release new products into the marketplace to displace their own products and remain ahead of everyone else. Finally, customer intimacy (service leadership) is achieved by companies that make customer service exceptional. These are companies such as Southwestern airlines which have an extreme focus on their customers and have understood to the nth degree their needs and desires.

The most important concept is that leading companies must never loose focus along the chosen dimension. If they do, companies can quickly loose their leadership position and eventually perish. The authors do provide numerous examples of companies that have gone on this journey.

A very insightful and highly recommended business/marketing book that brings execution back to its basics. If I had to add/change something in it, it would be to add more details to the journeys that some companies took from being market leaders to followers. The learnings on the business strategy side through such experience would be very valuable.
