an outstanding book!

This is really an outstanding book! Although there are a few books available on cryogenics, there is nothing like Frank Kerry's "Industrial Gas handbook" for both completeness and depth of coverage of pretty much everything related to ASU (oxygen -- nitrogen -- argon) plants and the Industrial Gas business. Engineers and really anyone interested in industrial gas -- ASU plants will appreciate the efforts Frank Kerry made to assemble all of this useful and complete information in the Handbook.

This is really an outstanding book (and I read it from cover to cover after it arrived from Amazon); Frank Kerry has assembled a collection of information on a subject that is essential to the functioning of so many components of modern society.

I congratulate Frank for his excellent work and for taking the time to document it so thoroughly and with such a natural balance of hard earned knowledge, essential theory and history. If you need or perhaps just want, to understand the processes around the separation, storage and transport of gases (particularly the atmospherics) then this is the book for you. I bought the book for a particular reason and found (along with the information I sought) an absolute wealth of insights that led to other related ideas.

It is my belief that books of this nature, concerning vital, fundamental techniques are as important to our survival and growth as a species, as are the efforts to conserve and improve biodiversity.

Highly recommended!!!

tell it like it is firefighter comes to Kevin’s rescue

The Bronco’s Boys series wraps up as soon as all of the men have found partners who deserve them. By the Round and Round book only Kevin still is single with no prospects. Well, that’s not quite true. He and Ken were almost a couple but that just didn’t work out.
When Kevin’s life and all of his property are threatened by a serial arsonist a rough, tell it like it is firefighter comes to Kevin’s rescue. Angus, or “MacDreamy Hotness” as Kevin comes to think about him, is the right match for Kevin. In fact, if you read Andrew Grey’s blog you will see there are more plans for Angus.
Neither man seems to understand the subtleties of flirting and dating. Therefore they misfire more than once. However, with the threats to Kevin’s life Angus isn’t willing to stand aside and let nature take its course. The arsonist and the fires, fatal to one important character, are the source of the angst in this book and it’s enough to glue you to the book until you finish it.
Bronco’s Boys is a series with more than a little drama, which sets it apart from some of Mr. Grey’s other books. I’ve loved following the adventures and misadventures of all of the men, who are close friends and as I always do with Mr. Grey’s series, I hate to see this one end. It ends on a high note with just the right HEAs for everyone, so I can put it aside to be read again another time.
I recommend this book for anyone who has read the rest of the series. It can comfortably be read as a stand alone but I think you will be drawn into their world and want to read the other books, too. And, if you drool over hot (in every sense of the word) firefighters, this is the book for you.

What Comes Around...

What a wonderful way to end a series. Three mid-20s gay men who are best of friends (Zach, Jeremy, Tristan) find love with three older hunks (Bull, Spook, Harry), with the key venue being Bronco's, a gay bar in central Pennsylvania where the young men dance and the older guys own, or hide out in.

In this book Angus, a hot mid-30s fireman originally from Scotland, and Kevin, the kind of cute and very geeky young one who has yet to find his love, meet in tragic circumstances and proceed to experience more tragedy, angst, love, lust and doubt as the plot unwinds.

This is the kind of stuff Andrew Grey excels at and in this one he really gets somewhat gruesome with all the fire activity, but it's key to everything. The romance is very rocky indeed, there are a couple of other (unrequited gay) characters who are perfectly set up to start a new series, and there is a general good feeling at the end.

My only complaint would be a spoiler, so I won't mention it because it's not as important to the book as are the implications of the cover. Woof!

Love this author

I love this series. I am sad to see it end but understand that now all the guys have found love their stories are finished. I was happy to see that Andrew Grey has said that he plans to do a series involving so of the guys we met in this book. I can't wait to see what come next. I have always enjoyed the fact that several of his series all revolve around the same town so you are always getting hints about other things from different stories.

Amazing lady!!!!

I loved the book and the way Esmeralda writes. Her life is an inspiration to all of us, especially young people. I hope many young people read it and realize how much they have in the USA and that Esmeralda, in spite of her difficult childhood, was able to become the successful woman she became. In addition, I was transported to my childchood where some of my experiences were similar to hers. I immediately bought another book and will continue reading them all.

I'm a student learning spanish...what better way to learn than to read a book in spanish

It took me 7 months to read this book, given my fluency in spanish, or a lack thereof. But I've finished it learning a lot more about the language and Puerto Rican culture. Is it good compared to other books written in spanish? I don't know, this is only the 2nd spanish novel I've read. The first was La Casa en Mango Street. I liked this one better than La Casa en Mango Street because it exposed me to so much that I hadn't been exposed to before, so I give it 5 stars.

En Cuando era puertorrique�a, Esmeralda Santiago nos relata los recuerdos de su infancia en Puerto Rico y sus primeras experiencias al llegar a los Estados Unidos. Es una narraci�n honesta y sencilla que cuenta la historia de una ni�a que proviene de una familia pobre y numerosa, su despertar a la realidad, el efecto que tiene en ella la complicada relaci�n de sus padres y c�mo tiene que enfrentarse a una vida completamente diferente a su llegada a Brooklyn y aprender a vivir entre dos culturas. Es tambi�n un homenaje a la belleza natural de la isla, la cocina aut�ctona y el orgullo y tradiciones de sus gentes. Sin embargo, no es necesario ser puertorrique�o para entender estos retos ni el amor que se siente por la tierra natal. Esta es la historia de muchos inmigrantes de los Estados Unidos, en especial la de los m�s afortunados, que no s�lo superan las adversidades y se acoplan a una nueva vida que puede ser incluso m�s dif�cil, sobre todo al comienzo, sino que tambi�n logran sus sue�os y se ven recompensados por todos sus esfuerzos. En mi opini�n hay cierta similitud entre la narrativa de Esmeralda Santiago y la de Julia �lvarez y as� como en el caso de Antes de ser libres, me parecen historias escritas especialmente para lectores j�venes.

About the Author

Charles S. Johnson, Jr. holds a Ph.D in physical chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has taught at the University of Illinois at Urbana, Yale University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he held the title of Smith Professor of Chemistry. He has authored approximately 150 research papers including review articles on magnetic resonance as well as books on laser light scattering and quantum mechanics. His research has been recognized with fellowships from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation. He has been elected to the rank of Fellow in the American Physical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Excellent Presentation of the Technically Relevant Information Pertaining to Photography

First off, let me comment on some of the other reviewers mentioning the content being too technical. I disagree on three fronts:
1) Look at the title folks, it is the science behind photography. By its very nature there is going to be some level of math and physics.

2) The math and physics are kept to a minimum. The formulas and equations are also kept to a minimum. If you understand high school algebra and trigonometry then you will have no problem understanding the majority of the technical material.

3) You can still benefit a great deal in learning about the science behind a lot of photography without understanding the math. Your insight into the subject matter will be necessarily more limited but this is not a limitation of the book so much it is a limitation of the reader. If you really want to understand the world around you on a deeper level and gain new insights into it, then, like it or not, math is the bridge to take you there. It's amazing how much more you can understand just by knowing some algebra and trigonometry.

Having said this, the book presents the material in a friendly way and the author is not condescending in any way. He makes learning the material fun and relevant and what he presents always has enough context to gain a deeper understanding. Unlike some dry and boring physics or optics books this book does not present mathematical proofs and is not a rigorous treatment. But it does provide a wealth of information, the majority of what you need to understand the relevant knowledge as it pertains to photography. As with any endeavor worthwhile in life, if you are willing to take the time and invest a little energy then you will find the reward at the end of your journey. I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting more than a superficial understanding of photography but yet doesn't want to spend many long hours of their life reading the long boring math and physics text books! :)

Science for the curious Photoghapher

I have found this little book to be a gem. It touches on most of the detailed science/technology underpinning contemporary digital photography. It is not a textbook, rather it is something of a handbook of basic information. There isn't much in it that I hadn't learned about at some earlier time, but it helped me to knit together those bits and pieces of important information or concepts in an enjoyable way.

The author has chosen carefully what to include and what not to include, based on his own considerable knowledge. The result is a tight little volume that I am very pleased to have acquired, because it was just what I was looking for. I'm sure that some readers may find it inadequate in some ways, but I didn't. I understood exactly what the author set out to do, and in my opinion he fully succeeded. I am reminded of the apology offered by the author of a very long letter to a friend... I'm sorry that this is so very long, I just didn't have time to write a shorter version.

Unique among photography books for its accessible, quantitative approach

Science for the Curious Photographer is unique among photography books I have
seen for daring to treat light, lenses, sensors, and ultimately vision in a
quantitative, scientific way. Yes, you need mathematics, but the required math
rarely exceeds the algebra and trig you learned in high school.

What you get in return for a bit of paper, pencil, and calculator work is a
much deeper understanding and appreciation of the trade-offs involved in the
costs, capabilities, and size of cameras. Johnson shows, for example, how you
can estimate your camera's minimum effective aperture (i.e., maximum F value)
from the physics of diffraction and the camera's sensor size. He also shows
how sensor size (something specified in your camera's technical specs)
influences signal-to-noise ratio and thus the maximum usable ISO value.

This book will especially appeal to those with an interest in physical science
or engineering. It will provide relief to those, like me, tired of the vague,
hand-waving generalizations about, say, depth of field found in so many other
books and classes.

Two shortcomings should be mentioned. First, the book's index is too spotty
and incomplete to be useful. The book is far more comprehensive than perusal
of the index would suggest. Better to use the table of contents to locate
topics of interest. Second, the bibliography could be better integrated with
cited references and further reading suggestions. As a whole, the book still
warrants all five stars. Perhaps, I hope, these suggestions will be realized
in a second edition.

Read by college (or precocious high school) students, Prof. Johnson's excellent
book might well launch careers in optics, semiconductors, and neuroscience.

Fantastic book!!

I want this book to become an entire series!! I started this book the day that I got it, and I couldn't put it down. I have some of Amy's books, but I haven't had the opportunity to read them. That is going to change. I read this book, and loved every single word that this book had. Growing up, you heard the story of the salem witches, Obsidian Flames is much better than that story. This is the story that I would have rather heard about. This one is so much better!! I HIGHLY recommend this book, and this author. If you haven't read her books yet, change that NOW!!!

Why It should be read

Go Ask Alice is a diary of a teenage girl dealing with the struggles of addiction and pressure from friends and family. This book ties in well to my ethnography project on recovering addicts. An Ethnography is the study and observation of a particular type of culture, the aim is for cultural interpretation. The ethnography project is on recovering addicts, the book deals with multiple occasions of this girl trying to quit her drug addiction. Her journey began with a spiked drink laced with LSD and the addiction took off from there. This book is very interesting and gives a good insight into the life of a insecure teenage always afraid of what others think. Alice has a recurring theme of a difficulty to communicate. This communication barrier to her friends and family are the reason she declined deeper into the world of drugs. She is too afraid of what others will think of her, so she drowns herself into drugs to take her out of reality for a small glimpse of time. Repeatedly throughout the book, Alice brings up how she can easily quit and the she isn't an “Addict” and each time she does, its the happiest moment of her life, even if it lasts for a couple of weeks. She says “In San Francisco we won’t know a single soul that uses it and it will be easy to stay off” within a month the streak was broken, and she was back to using. This book is definitely a must read for teens because of it dealing with the fears of how society will perceive you and how trying to hide from the truth and having a lack of trust can put you down a road that can only lead to a life of depression and the constant urge to escape reality.

Interesting, but not super impressive

“Go Ask Alice”, written by an anonymous author, contains stories of a teenage girl whose life is torn apart by her addiction to various drugs . “Alice”, thought to be the main character of the book, becomes involved in numerous situations in which she experiments with drugs. Although her first experience with drugs was without her knowledge, she lets herself go deeper and deeper into the new world she has discovered. Whether it was doing drugs, dealing them, or running away from home, this book explores the effects addiction can have on the human body and mind.
While I feel this book is a great lesson for teens when it comes to the dangers of drug addiction, it also has its flaws. For example, while it portrays itself as a real story, the novel is completely fictional. Now, although the book has a great lesson by itself, when the reader finds out it is in fact NOT based on a true story, it almost ruins the lessons within the novel. Many parts of the book are also extremely exaggerated. For example, Alice runs hundreds of miles away not once, but twice, from her family and friends. The book even describes how she found a job in San Francisco, where she’s hired by a man who owns a “little shop in the lobby of an incredibly expensive hotel”. Even though this could happen in theory, the chances are unlikely and in my opinion it was all too much. My overall opinion of the book is it was just an okay book. It didn’t blow me away, but kept me interested enough to keep reading at the same time.
Having said that, Go Ask Alice still scares readers using her experiences whether they’re real or not. While the times she went through may have been crazy, they put in perspective how drugs and addiction can completely ruin someone’s life in the matter of weeks. All in all, I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone who is looking for an extremely well written novel, considering that it is written in the form of a teenage diary. However, I would recommend it to anyone looking for a shorter read, as well as someone who would like to be informed about the effects of addiction on the human brain through reading experiences.

who felt like an outcast

In the book, Go Ask Alice, a young girl, who felt like an outcast, was invited to a party. The kids who were there were considered popular at her old school. She was so excited to finally be accepted by them, all she ever really wanted was to be one of them. During the party, they decided to play a game. The girl wasn't sure what the game was, but decided it would be a good idea to participate. A few moments when by, and then she started to feel weird. She soon found out that she had just taken a drug called LSD. This is what started it all. The girl became addicted. Her life went into a downward spiral. She had left home, took more and more drugs, and put herself into a lot of danger. She experienced highs and lows throughout her time with drugs, and this book goes into depth with personal recollections of how she felt through it all. It explained how easy it was for something that wasn't in her control to begin with to get out of hand and turn into something much worse. When it first happened at that party, she had continuously told herself that she doesn't “think [she’ll] ever try it again,” but also never wanted to give up the feeling of each trip. That's what I like about this book. It talks about why she enjoyed taking drugs, but also shows the terrible consequences that she had to face because of it. It showed her struggle each time drugs were near her, and how much willpower it took for her not to take them. The situations were somewhat realistic, and showed how easy it was for her to hide her addiction from the people she was close with. You truly never know who around you could be like Alice. I would recommend reading Go Ask Alice, but it was not exactly what I expected it to be. I thought it was actually the young girl’s diary, when in reality an author wrote it. This took away from the lessons and meaning the book aimed to teach. Another critique I would have is that it was fast paced and felt like time went by very quickly, causing you to feel like you missed a lot of her life. Overall, it was well written and worth reading. Amazing contemporary romance!

Fairytale Not Required is contemporary romance at its best. Filled with raw emotion and realism, we easily become absorbed in the passion, drama and romance of its two protagonists. There is no holding back when we become swept away by the tidal wave of romance palpable in this amazing contemporary read.

In Fairytale Not Required, we delve into the fiery and vibrant world of Astrid, a character whom I was immediately drawn to in No Knight Needed. Stephanie Rowe has successfully created a strong female protagonist in Astrid, one who is so unbelievably complex and realistic that when her back story unfolded I was completely immersed in her story. And what a heartbreaking story it is!

Very early on in the novel, we are held captive by the delicious introduction of the newest addition to Birch Crossing, Jason. Jason, much like Astrid, is an equally complex individual; although one that carries demons of his own. It is when these two amazing, complicated characters' lives become entwined that the real passion and drama begins.

Fairytale Not Required is an compelling read that is both hot and modern. It should most definitely be on your "Don't think, just buy now!" list. Bex `n' Books Rated 5 phenomenal fairies!

Stephanie knocks it out of the park with this one! Fairytale Not Required has everything you could possible want in a romance...
Amazing characters that are both trying to run from or forget their pasts only to run right smack dab into each other. Jason is ready and willing to open his heart to Astrid, but Astrid has her doubts about anything good actually being able to happen to her. Jason is determined to convince her otherwise.
This is a must read story that will grip your heart and have you staying up way past bedtime trying to finish.

This is a quick paced story that grabs a hold of you right from the start and won't let go. It's about two people that have both been hurt very deeply and need to learn how to trust and not judge each other by someone else's actions. They also have to learn about themselves and face their own demons.
I am very taken with Stephanie Rowe's writing and I haven't found any of her books that I don't love.

The photographs themselves, which range from clear close-ups to artfully blurred or angled shots, show a reassuringly varied cast of children and adults of many races and cultures. For "joining a friend's celebration," children break a pinata; for "learning to do things in a different way," a boy learns to use chopsticks from his Asian friends. A slightly hokey ending, in which children are shown reading this very book "and thinking about making the world a better place," is in tune with the book's gentle didacticism. GraceAnne A. Very nice message in this book

I was looking for a book to help children understand the concept of peace and found this one. It is very easy to understand the message and the children in my class really enjoyed hearing it and sharing their thoughts.
