From the Back Cover
History (much like his contemporaries) has tended to judge Camus harshly – as mediocre philosopher, conflicted man of the left and, worst of all, apologist for French imperialism. Yet, as David Sherman argues in this rewarding new study, a sensitive reading of the entirety of Camus’s writings reveals both a power and unity of philosophical purpose. The ethico-political sympathies manifested in these writings evidence an integrity that places him among the greatest and most vital humanist voices of our time.

The book covers all of Camus’s significant writings and includes thorough expositions of The Myth of Sisyphus, The Stranger, The Fall, The Plague, and The Rebel. A discussion of the metaphysical and practical connotations of Camus’s celebrated concept of The Absurd lays the foundation for a discussion of the later works, which are considered in the context of Camus’s basic ethical orientation. This, it is contended, harks back (and, with its recent resurgence, forward) to a virtue ethics of sorts. It is argued that Camus’s literary characters are purified phenomenological portraits that reflect the existential temptations of an overwhelmed modern consciousness, and the ethico-political works reflect the efforts of a morally committed consciousness to come to grips with a modern world unable to make good the moral imperative. In the end, it is argued, Camus offers a phenomenological ethics, which is all that is left of virtue ethics when social life has broken down.

PHILOSOPHY FOR POLITICAL LEADERS
By Yehezkel Dror
Avant-Garde Politician: Leaders for a New Epoch

Plato may have presented inThe Republic the idea that political leaders should be philosphers in order to demonstrate that there is no hope that political leaders will in fact be of required quality. In his later books on that subject, The Statesman and The Laws, written after having some bitter experiences advising the rulers of Syracus, he reduced the required standards of political leaders while redefining their tasks. But the problem of inadequate and also bad political leaders remains with us, becoming all the more serious because of emerging fateful problems facing humanity which make high-quality political leaders essential, as explained in my recent book.

High-quality political leaders need a personal philosophy fitting their increasingly important missions. Reading this well-written book on Camus and then The Fall and The Rebel by Camus, together wilth his play "Caligula," will serve to introduce a political leader or a reader aspiring to become one to the pertinent ideas of Camus.

Let me illustrate them by taking up three themes of particular importance for political leaders facing the emerging metamorphosis of humanity. The first one concerns the required ethics. As put in the book "Camus's position resonates with ...Aristotelian virtue ethics. Unlike Millean utilitariasnism and Kantian deontology, which focus on consequences and acts, respectively, the focus of virtue ethics in on the agent,...and it considers whether this personis is of fine character overall rather then one who just refrains from doing the wrong thing"
(p. 24).

Political leaders must be bound by some rules and consideration of consequences should be central to their pondering. And what are the virtues apprpriate to political leaders in different societies at various periods of history is far from obvious. But, still, a good measure of virtues is essential for being a high-quality political leaders, a demand which disqualified many of the present top level politicians worldwide.

The second point, which is a hallmark of existentalism (p. 70), postulates that a person has always significant free choice and therefore carries much personal responsibility. True, the world is full with facticity, both external to a person and concerning a person himself, which strictly limits freedom of choice. But, still, "the facts never overdetermine how I might choose to approach them" (p. 71). Furthermore, what matters more than "facts" as resulting from the past is what we seek to bring about (p. 92), there always being choices on what to do.

Therefore, for instance, to give an example of my own: The president of a country who does not do what she regards as necessary for long-term thriving because opinion polls show that the voters are more interested in the here and now and doing what is really appropriate may cost her the next elections, telling herself that she "is bound by the facts of public opinion," betrays her mission.

The third and last point to be mentioned here, out of many presented in the book, deals with the need to rebel against bad realilties, without the illusion that human being can be perfected and also doubts about their moral improvabililty. This, I claim, fully applies to contemporalry political leaders who in their minds should rebel againsts the present dismal state of existance of humanty and even worse likely to come. But, what I call the needed avant-garde politicians must engage in "public interest Machiavellianism," hiding rebellious intentions and acts, otherwise in most societies, including nearly all democratic ones, he will lose his power to do what is necessary. As put well by Sartre, the counterpart of Camus (whom I will discuss in another book review) "There is a morality in politics...and when politics must betray its morality, to choose morality is to betray politics" (p. 174). Camus never fully accepted this position, but I read his The Rebe, as leading towards it, but with a strict warning that no goal justifies disproportional sacrifice of human values in the hope of realizing what is an impossible "utopia."

Thus, Camus warns against fanaticism, while recognizing the need for rejection of contemporary realities. I recommend this position as a a central component of the qualities required by political leaders in our world.

This book is highly recommended to all who consider politics as their vocation - all the more so as the breeding grounds of many politicians in law and public policy schools neglect the study of life-philosophies despite their criticality.

The Everlasting Stream: A True Story of Rabbits, Guns, Friendship, and Family, by Walt Harrington

When Walt Harrington was first invited to Kentucky to hunt with his African American father-in-law and his country friends--Bobby, Lewis, and Carl--he was a jet-setting reporter for The Washington Post with a distaste for killing animals and for the men’s brand of old-fashioned masculinity. But over the next 12 years, this white city slicker entered a world of life, death, nature, and manhood that came to seem not brutal or outdated but beautiful in a way his experience in Washington was not. The Everlasting Stream is the absorbing, touching, and often hilarious story of how hunting with these "good ol' boys" forced an "enlightened" man to reexamine his modern notions of guilt and responsibility, friendship and masculinity, ambition and satisfaction.

In crisp prose that bring autumn mornings crackling to life, Harrington shares the lessons that led him to leave Washington. When his son turned 14, Harrington began taking him hunting too, believing that these rough-edged, whiskey-drinking men could teach his suburban boy something worthwhile about lives different from his own, the joy of small moments, and the old-fashioned belief that a man's actions mean more than his words.

The Everlasting Stream is a funny, intimate, inspiring meditation on the meaning of a life well lived.

CHAPTER ONE
Walt recounts the first time he went shooting with his father-in-law, Alex, in rural Glasgow, Kentucky, during a Thanksgiving visit with his wife. “I lived in Washington DC, where most people I knew believed hunters were sick, violent men.” His attitude toward his African-American hunting mates (“I was white, and I figured it was going to be my worry to fit in”) is “condescending as hell,” but it all turns around when he shoots his first rabbit, and surprises himself with the purity of his exhuberence when he calls out, “I got him!” He discusses the repulsion over having to clean his rabbit, but when his guests act similarly repulsed when he serves them rabbit dinner, he says “I think I’m going to kill some more.”

CHAPTER TWO
He describes hunting with Alex, Bobby, Lewis and Carl in a gully half the length of football field. “Over the years I’ve become convinced that Alex, Bobby, Lewis, and Carl have discovered the secrets of living life well,” although “the idea that these men had anything to teach me didn’t come to me for many Thanksgiving vacations.” He is attracted by how well they get to know a place through hunting it: “How many of us can say that about any place in our lives?” The men are like relics of a bygone era, but they eventually convinced him that he should bring his son along too. He introduces Carl and Bobby, who have retired from factory jobs—they own sixty acres together in the country. Lewis bought his own 18-wheel rig a few years ago and still hauls freight. Alex is retired and has many hobbies. The men talk in a colorful drawl about their dogs, teasing each other mercilessly.

CHAPTER THREE
He talks about hunting at the Old Collins Place. Every time he comes back there, he sees something for the first time. He talks about how ambitious he was as a kid, determined to make a name for himself in journalism. He meets his wife-to-be, Keran, and works thankless 70-hour weeks until he finally writes a profile of George Bush that gets him major attention, a huge raise, and freedom to cover other figures such as Jesse Jackson, Jerry Falwell, etc.

CHAPTER FOUR: BOBBY’S BARN
His son Matt catches a rabbit and gets a sip off the post-hunting bottle of Wild Turkey. He discusses his tough decision of taking the boy hunting for the first time when he was seven: “Really I rolled the dice. I knew that most affluent city perople would shield their sons from such rough men and gritty settings. But after my first few years of hunting I deced that the forests, fields, wind, rain moon, stars, leaves, weeds, guns, killing, cursing, drinking—and naturally the men themselves—would be good for Matt.” He describes skinning and gutting a rabit—he does it without squeamishness because “it has to be done,” the same way you have to clean up a kid’s vomit.

LAWSON BOTTOM
He discusses the time it dawned on him that he had come to savor things—the Miro painting he owns, for instance— and asks himself “I love my work but what if the day comes when I don’t? What happens to all of this? What happens to me? Will I be trapped in my affluence for the rest of my life?” (The climax of his career comes when President Bush is seriously considering appointing him as his official biographer, and even invites him to a celebrity-studded dinner, but eventually Bush decides the security risk is too great. Harrington considers it a blessing in disguise, thinking about all of the quality time he would have lost with his son, etc.)

THE EVERLASTING STREAM
He recalls a morning of picture-perfect contentment at a place called the Everlasting Stream—“such memorable moments are like waking versions of lucid dreams. We are within them and outside them at once as they are happening.” He reflects “To this day I don’t believe I have ever seen men so at ease, so thoroughly enjoying one another’s company.” He realizes he hasn’t had true friends like these since he was kid.

BEHIND BC WITT’S FARM
He talks about the way that moment at the Everlasting Stream has caused him to think of hunting not just as a diversion, but to think of it off and on throughout the year. Carl takes him to the four-room shack where he grew up and Harrington is shocked by how small and run-down it is. Carl says “We hunted to eat.”

THE SQUARE
He describes being in the zone—“hunters since Socrates onward have described an ethereal hunter’s state of mental and emotional clarity. What nature writer James Swan calls the Zen of hunting--- ‘a state of awe and reverence, which I sthe emotional foundation for transcendence.”

LEWIS’S GARAGE
He talks about the joys of hanging out in Lewis’s garage after hunting. “I have come to love hearing the men laugh. After all the years, if I were blind I’d still know the men by their laughs.” .. “Listening to the men is like watching a pinball bounce around its board. The action is impossible to predict but it isn’t random. The point is to relax and lety my time with the men wash over me in the way that a Christmas midnight Mass with candles and organ and incense would wash over me as a boy.”

From Publishers Weekly
With humor and insight, Harrington (Crossings: A White Man's Journey into Black America) weaves several themes in his tribute to friendship and storytelling: a study of masculinity, a corrective to the belief that hunting is savage, a father-son chronicle, an ode to common folks, an examination of race, and a city mouse/country mouse fable. That he uses his African-American father-in-law's annual Thanksgiving rabbit hunts as a thread to stitch these patches together only enhances his achievement. Harrington, a white, former Washington Post Magazine writer, nicely balances analytical distance with the stories of the wisecracking, whiskey-sipping black pals of his father-in-law, who are interested in shooting the breeze as much as the cottontails. With its description of crying bears and why it's better to be "off the egg" than on (i.e., able to bag a bunny), this does for hunting what A River Runs Through It did for fly-fishing. Comparing sunrises to cleaning prey might be a stretch, but not when the prose is this beautifully tactile: for Harrington, it's feral yet transporting to "cut a rabbit's belly open on a cold day and suddenly feel its innards warm your freezing hands."

From Library Journal
According to Harrington (Univ. of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign), an award-winning journalist for the Washington Post Magazine and the author of Crossings, his latest work is "a hybrid, comprising journalism, memoir, and essay." Harrington tells several good hunting stories while giving readers a detailed education in the art of hunting rabbits. Interspersed throughout this thoughtful book is the author's own story of his simple beginnings and rise up the corporate ladder and his decision to give up the prestigious job to return, with his family, to a simpler life. This urban journalist also tells of his experiences with his African American father-in-law and his lifetime buddies in rural Kentucky, all against a backdrop of hunting rabbits. The question of why we hunt is explored in depth and summed up in a conversation the author had with a dinner guest. "I can't believe you killed those little bunnies," the guest said. His response: "I can't believe you ate those little bunnies without killing one." Recommended for all public and academic libraries. Scott R. DiMarco, Herkimer Cty. Community Coll., NY

"A magical book. "The Everlasting Stream is an exquisite work by a talented journalist who knows...that the story of America is better told through men and women we know only by their first names than those we know only by lofty titles."

Refreshed by The Everlasting Stream
By Edgar Iwamoto
After seeing The Everlasting Stream featured on PBS, I read the book to find out about a number of issues I had with hunting and the associated killing of animals. Although I had fished in years past, before reading this book hunting seemed "barbaric" to me. After reading the book I have a better understanding of the sport, and am a little more open-minded about those who hunt and those who own guns, rifles and shotguns and hunt for the sport and food. (Mind you, I still don't consider an AK-47 a hunting implement.) The other stories in the book, of friendship and family were heart-warming, honest and a breath of fresh air, and remind the reader that indeed we strive to be the best in a brother, a son, a father, that family comes first, and that broken lines of communication should be mended before we leave this earth. In addition, as one-half of an interracial marriage these past 35 years, I identified with the author's relationships with his spouse, his father-in-law Alex and Alex's friends. Of Alex, Bobby, Lewis and Carl, I'm reminded of the saying, "Make new friends, but keep the old. One is silver and the other gold." I loved Harrington's style, and substance, of writing so much that I am now reading another of his books, Crossings: A White Man's Journey into Black America, and so far it is outstanding as well. And finally, the book's other storyline---leaving the yuppie fast lane of traffic---resonated with this reviewer as well.

The kind of hunting book that every anti-hunter should read ...

The kind of hunting book that every anti-hunter should read because it's a story of relationships and how hunting ties the binds between people.

This book was recommended to me by a hunter friend when I expressed an interest in learning to hunt deer. The book is about a group of men who get together every year to hunt rabbits. You feel like you're right there with them. Some of the anecdotes are laugh out loud funny. Also, the author is white, the hunters who welcomed him into their circle of friends are all black: The author's father in law and his friends. Such a good book on so many levels.

ANNA!!! This is so exciting!!! My recognition that I don't have to think about the mechanics of speech....just as I don't have to think about the mechanics of breathing....was a transformational insight for me. Effortless spontaneous speech is what it's all about. I got two copies....one for upstairs and one for downstairs!!! Thank you for writing this book. Ruth Mead/Farrell

Thanks, Anna Margolina for your profound insights on stuttering.
By Jeff Klayman
I approached "Letting Go of the Dragon" with some trepidation. As a life-long severe stutterer, I thought I could not bear to read yet another book on the subject, especially one touting a new therapeutic approach. I've tried them all, "been there, done that" etc. It's a pleasure to report that I devoured Ms Margolina's book in one sitting--it's not long and extremely readable. A stutterer herself, Margolina has walked the walk, talked the talk as only persons who stutter can. This baffling, seemingly untreatable, uncurable disorder has been dealt with ad infinitum, especially in the past decade with the fairly recent advent of research in the brain's plasticity, Neuro-Linguistic Programming and other modalities. The one common through-line in all the new approaches seem to be that they are all firmly rooted in ANTI-technique, ANTI-control ways of treating stuttering. This is a breath of fresh air certainly for all stutterers who have tried and failed in regimens (there are dozens!!) that emphasize that there is a need to consciously modify the way a stutterer speaks--through often elaborate strategies of breathing control, pausing, releasing air etc. Clearly, there are hundreds who have indeed been helped by these methods, in some cases long-term. But for others, this has proven a fruitless and frustrating path. The old dictum "Madness is doing the same thing over and over, expecting different results" holds true here with great force. The conundrum of stuttered speech is that the sufferer knows he or she is 100% capable of normal, fluent speech in some or most situations. Therefore, one is left with the question of what is causing this duality in the brain? Dr. Margolina addresses this issue with some scholarly examples (she has done her homework) and proposes that Neuro-Linguistic Programming may be the answer for many stutterers. At the very least, read this book and draw your own conclusions. "Letting Go of the Dragon" is a necessary and very worthy addition to the growing literature on stuttering. It gives one hope to "never give up". Nothing comes from doing nothing. Work and perseverance win out--always!!

) But thanks to people like Anna Margolina
By John Harrison
Chronic stuttering and blocking is unquestionably one of the most misunderstood of problems, and has been so for the last 5,000 years (the Bible reports that Moses stuttered.) But thanks to people like Anna Margolina, that situation is rapidly changing. Anna is one of a growing number of recovered stutterers who are reconceptualizing this problem in a way that represents a major paradigm shift. Anna has truly "walked the walk." She's moved from a person who could barely got out a sentence to someone who's a riveting presenter and habitual winner at Toastmaster competitions. With her Ph.D. in biology from the University of Moscow, she has the mind of a scientist and the fortitude of an Olympic wrestler. "Letting Go of the Dragon" is a real eye opener on the true nature of this formerly mystifying problem. In this book you'll find meaningful answers to many long-standing problems. This book is a game changer.

Critical Literacy and Urban Youth: Pedagogies of Access, Dissent, and Liberation (Language, Culture, and Teaching Series), by Ernest Morre

Critical Literacy and Urban Youth offers an interrogation of critical theory developed from the author’s work with young people in classrooms, neighborhoods, and institutions of power. Through cases, an articulated process, and a theory of literacy education and social change, Morrell extends the conversation among literacy educators about what constitutes critical literacy while also examining implications for practice in secondary and postsecondary American educational contexts. This book is distinguished by its weaving together of theory and practice.

Morrell begins by arguing for a broader definition of the "critical" in critical literacy – one that encapsulates the entire Western philosophical tradition as well as several important "Othered" traditions ranging from postcolonialism to the African-American tradition. Next, he looks at four cases of critical literacy pedagogy with urban youth: teaching popular culture in a high school English classroom; conducting community-based critical research; engaging in cyber-activism; and doing critical media literacy education. Lastly, he returns to theory, first considering two areas of critical literacy pedagogy that are still relatively unexplored: the importance of critical reading and writing in constituting and reconstituting the self, and critical writing that is not just about coming to a critical understanding of the world butthat plays an explicit and self-referential role in changing the world. Morrell concludes by outlining a grounded theory of critical literacy pedagogy and considering its implications for literacy research, teacher education, classroom practice, and advocacy work for social change.

Very dense, but full of info
By Kelli H. Wright
I read this book as part of a course, and I struggled through most of it because of the language. I think the approach is a valid one, and it is something I hope to use in my future classroom. But do not expect to read this leisurely on a Sunday afternoon, this is definitely a dense critical text that requires your full attention to comprehend. I commend the author on sharing his experience in the classroom.
