Amazon.com Review
Short and snappy as it is, Stephen King's On Writing really contains two books: a fondly sardonic autobiography and a tough-love lesson for aspiring novelists. The memoir is terrific stuff, a vivid description of how a writer grew out of a misbehaving kid. You're right there with the young author as he's tormented by poison ivy, gas-passing babysitters, uptight schoolmarms, and a laundry job nastier than Jack London's. It's a ripping yarn that casts a sharp light on his fiction. This was a child who dug Yvette Vickers from Attack of the Giant Leeches, not Sandra Dee. "I wanted monsters that ate whole cities, radioactive corpses that came out of the ocean and ate surfers, and girls in black bras who looked like trailer trash." But massive reading on all literary levels was a craving just as crucial, and soon King was the published author of "I Was a Teen-Age Graverobber." As a young adult raising a family in a trailer, King started a story inspired by his stint as a janitor cleaning a high-school girls locker room. He crumpled it up, but his writer wife retrieved it from the trash, and using her advice about the girl milieu and his own memories of two reviled teenage classmates who died young, he came up with Carrie. King gives us lots of revelations about his life and work. The kidnapper character in Misery, the mind-possessing monsters in The Tommyknockers, and the haunting of the blocked writer in The Shining symbolized his cocaine and booze addiction (overcome thanks to his wife's intervention, which he describes). "There's one novel, Cujo, that I barely remember writing."

King also evokes his college days and his recovery from the van crash that nearly killed him, but the focus is always on what it all means to the craft. He gives you a whole writer's "tool kit": a reading list, writing assignments, a corrected story, and nuts-and-bolts advice on dollars and cents, plot and character, the basic building block of the paragraph, and literary models. He shows what you can learn from H.P. Lovecraft's arcane vocabulary, Hemingway's leanness, Grisham's authenticity, Richard Dooling's artful obscenity, Jonathan Kellerman's sentence fragments. He explains why Hart's War is a great story marred by a tin ear for dialogue, and how Elmore Leonard's Be Cool could be the antidote.

King isn't just a writer, he's a true teacher. --Tim Appelo

From Publishers Weekly
As his diehard fans know, King is a member of a writers-only rock 'n' roll band (Amy Tan is also a member), and this recording starts off with a sampling of their music. It may sound unsettling to some, but King quickly puts listeners at ease with his confident, candid and breezy tone. Here, King tells the story of his childhood and early influences, describes his development as a writer, offers extensive advice on technique (read: write tight and no bullshit) and finally recounts his well-known experience of being hit by a drunk driver while walking on a country road in 1999 and the role that his work has played in his rehabilitation. While some of his guidance is not exactly revolutionary (he recommends The Elements of Style as a must-have reference), other revelations that vindicate authors of popular fiction, like himself, as writers, such as his preference for stressing character and situation over plot, are engrossing. He also offers plenty of commonsense advice on how to organize a workspace and structure one's day. While King's comical childhood anecdotes and sober reflections on his accident may be appreciated while driving to work or burning calories on a treadmill, the book's main exercise does not work as well in the audio format. King's strongest recommendation, after all, is that writers must be readers, and despite his adept performance, aspiring authors might find that they would absorb more by picking up the book. Based on the Scribner hardcover (Forecasts, July 31, 2000).

From School Library Journal

Adult/High School-By the time King was 14, the scads of rejection slips he'd accumu-lated grew too heavy for the nail in the wall on which they were mounted. He replaced the nail with a spike and went on writing. This straight-up book inspires without being corny, and teens suspicious of adult rhap-sodies to perseverance will let down their guard and be put at ease by the book's gritty conversational tone. The first 100 pages are pure memoir-paeans to the horror movies and fanzines that captivated King as a child, the expected doses of misadventure (weeks of detention for distributing his own satirical zine at school; building an electromagnet that took out the electricity of half a street), and hard times. King writes just as passion-ately in the second half of the book, where the talk turns to his craft. He provides plenty of samples of awkward or awful writing and contrasts them with polished versions. Hand this title to reluctant readers and reluctant writers, sit back, and watch what happens.-Emily Lloyd, Fairfax County Public Library, VA

Aptly Titled
By Debi C.
I enjoyed this book thoroughly, and took my time reading it. I could "hear" Mr. King's "voice" in my head as I read this on my iPad Kindle app. I felt like I was reading something from a friend---as if he had written a personal letter to me--- to give me an understanding of what he went through to become the person he is today. I think that his directives about the "how-to's" and "don't do's" were very practical. I breathed a sigh of relief when I got the feeling that writing classes and clubs are kind of a waste of time. Just write, is what I think he was telling me, I mean, his audience. I will probably read it again. What I got from his personal, real-life-lessons is this: Read a lot. Read good stuff. Write all the time. Find a place and write. Don't share your stuff unless you share it with someone you can trust. Go with your gut. Write all the time (I said that already because he said it or inferred it frequently). Don't use the same adjective over and over. Stick to the point. Don't over-do it on the descriptions. Let your audience see the movie you see in your head, because if you write it well, they will. I am glad this wasn't a "point by point HOW TO WRITE a story or a book" book, because really, writing isn't something you can do easily from a bulleted list. Writing is something you do from your heart, and you keep doing it until it's right and good. And then when that person you trust reads your stuff and offers some criticism, you can take it for what it's worth and use it or not.

The Grail Book
By Steven Black
The Grail Book, it is that good. Let me start by saying I have read dozens of books "on writing" and they are all mostly the same. They talk about plotting your book, outlining it, which voice to use, first person, second person, etc. In essence they all talk about the mechanics of writing which is all fine and good if you are planning to write a "literary novel" which nobody will ever read and you will be lucky to make a single $100 bill out of. If you want to write mainstream popular fiction; however, (you know the kind that actually sells) then this book is for you.
King believes that book ideas are not plotted, rather they are found much like a lost relic or bone is found in the ground. He sometimes starts writing with no clue of the eventual ending of the story. The book literary makes itself. For example in the book Green Mile King was not sure whether the arrested criminal (who was actually innocent) would die or live in the end. The story or (fossil) literary wrote itself.
If you can have just one book on the craft of writing I recommend this book. It was the techniques in this book which led to the inspiration of my own book, "The Gambler," by Steven Black.

Stephen King Lives and Writes Through Situations
By Stephen W. Hiemstra ﻦ
My primary writing project during the past year has been to write a memoir. Being new to the genre, I started by publishing my father’s memoir, enrolled in an online writing course, read numerous writing books, and reviewed a few good memoirs. Stephen King’s book, On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft, touches on each of these activities.

The breadth of this memoir comes as a surprise—what is a memoir of a craft anyway? King divides his memoir into several parts, including:

• C.V. (17-101).
• What Writing Is (103-137).
• On Writing (141-249).
• On Living: A Postscript (253-270).
• And Furthermore, Part I: Door Shut, Door Open (271-284).
• And Furthermore, Part II: A Booklike (285-288).
• Further to Furthermore, Part III (289-291).

His chapters are preceded by three forewords and, in spite of its length, this memoir reads quickly—but not too quickly. Still, the breadth of this work comes from the way that King weaves his life and his craft together—a visitor to the King house might be advised to forbear exploring the closets! What the heck; let’s explore.

King is an author and a household name. He has written numerous (35+) books, many of which have also appeared in film. As an example, his breakout work, Carrie, sold first as a paperback novel (1973) and was released three years later as a horror film.

Interestingly, Tabitha, King’s wife, rescued an early manuscript of Carrie from the trash, as King recalls:

“I had four problems with what I’d written. First, … the story didn’t move me emotionally. Second, ... I didn’t much like the lead character. Carrie White seemed thick and passive, a ready-made victim. … Third, … [I] was not feeling at home with either the surroundings or my all-girl cast of supporting characters. … Fourth, … the story wouldn’t pay unless it was pretty long. … I couldn’t see wasting two weeks, maybe even a month, creating a novella I didn’t like and wouldn’t be able to sell. So I threw it away.” (76-77)

But, confronted with his Ideal Reader (Tabitha) telling him that this manuscript had promise, King went back and gave Carrie his best shot.

This notion of an Ideal Reader is interesting. King writes for his wife, Tabitha, who happens also to be an author, which seems most fortunate because she can articulate her opinions to King in actionable language. King explains:

“Call that one person you write for Ideal Reader. He or she is going to be in your writing room all the time: in the flesh once you open the door and let the world back in to shine on the bubble of your dream, in spirit during the sometimes troubling and often exhilarating days of the first draft, when the door is closed.” (219)

King sees the Ideal Reader as particularly helpful in judging story pace—“the speed at which your narrative unfolds”—and the details to include in your backstory—“all the stuff that happened before your tale began but which has an impact on the front story” (220-223).

Part of the back story in King’s memoir evolves into front story in his postscript where he describes in detail his experience of being run over by a Dodge van in June of 1999, while walking down a country road in rural Maine (253-255). This story of his near-death experience might have been just an interesting aside, except for the fact that King had motivational problems in finishing this memoir back in that summer (265). I suspect that his life story suddenly became a slightly higher priority, having been thrown 14 feet in the air (259) and improbably lived through the experience.

Before I wrap up this review, let me make one more observation. King has an interesting view of plot. He describes plot as too big a hammer (a jackhammer) for normal use by fiction author and he prefers to motivate his characters through stressful situations (164). If you believe that we act out of our identities, then no two characters will respond the same way to a given tricky situation. How a story evolves out of a situation is therefore interesting and potentially surprising because people discover the character in themselves as they are challenged by life’s situations—we are ultimately strangers to ourselves; that is, until we are not. The thrill in the thriller is therefore hard to duplicate with a plot-line where the author already knows where the story will go and how it will get there—it is better to scrape the plot and discover the character the same way that a reader might. Therefore, King looks for strong situations and explores interesting what-if scenarios to challenge his characters and writes intuitively about how they respond (169).

Stephen King’s memoir, On Writing, is an interesting and helpful book for wannabe and experienced authors both, because he explores both writing and the writing life. Film buffs might also read this book to garner the backstory on his films, many of which are now cult classics. Personally, I read this book mostly because I like to read and love to write—perhaps, you do too.

This textbook discusses the important laboratory techniques of organic chemistry and illustrates many important reactions and concepts. In the traditional approach to teaching this subject, the quantities of chemicals used were on the order of 5-100 grams, and glassware was designed to contain up to 500 mL of liquid. This scale of experiment we might call a macroscale experiment. The approach used here, a microscale approach, differs from the traditional laboratory course in that nearly all the experiments use small amounts of chemicals.

Best explanation of dressage basics anywhere.
By Jessica B. Woodhouse
This book lives by my bed and I will soon have to buy another copy because there is no more room for marginal notes, comments, etc. If I could only recommend one book about riding this would be it. There is beautiful writing here about the goals, aims and principles of classical riding, but even more helpful to the rider are the detailed chapters on the basics. Ever wondered why those great classical riders make it all look so effortless, while everyone else is huffing and puffing and fighting with their horses? Everyone talks about how important basics are and how riders spend too little time mastering them before trying to do "the movements," but most dressage books spend perhaps a few pages on position and aids and then jump right into shoulder-in and it's off to the races. Herbermann puts his money where his mouth is and actually devotes an entire book to explaining all the tiny details that go into creating the basic foundation for classical, harmonious riding. Basics, basics, basics! Chapters on the seat and position, the aids, and the signs of correct and incorrect work. If you want to get away from "band-aid" riding --riding from correction to correction-- and find a guide into the realm of correct, harmonious, classical work, this book is the place to start. This is one of the most uncompromising -- and inspiring -- discussions of the principles of classical riding you will ever read.

Best of the best on classical riding
By Duaa Anwar
The amount of elaboration in this book about the true basics of classical riding makes it by far one of the best available dressage books on the market. The 'basics' does not make this book for amateurs, because even some advanced riders have not had the basics cleared. I was inspired by Herbermann's respect for the horse and his approach on making training more pleasurable for horses. His simple and clear instuction on the essence of classical riding makes it within reach of every rider. The first part of the book focuses on the rider's position and aids. Later on, collection and advanced work is described in detail. He doesn't get into very advanced stages though...flying changes, canter pirouettes, piaffe, passage, etc., are not covered. The book is about getting the basics right.
The title of the book very much explains what it is about - the formula that will help you reach new heights with your horse. I recommend this book to every rider willing to give their horse more comfort and joy in dressage.

practical guidance from a classical master
By Jessica B. Woodhouse
This book is a fantastic practical guide for classical riders! Eric Herbermann is a long-time student of Egon von Neindorff, widely regarded as one of the great living classical masters. I have never ridden at von Neindorff's Reitinstitut, but my understanding from those who have is that Herbermann's book (approved by von Neindorff) reflects Reitinstitut teachings very closely.
Straightforward, well-illustrated outline format sections on the seat, the aids, and correct basic work give wonderfully clear guidance to riders, while prose chapters on the philosophy and aims of classical horsemanship emphasize the spiritual values on which the art form is based. The section on the "most common position corrections" should be prominently posted in every dressage arena!
This book concentrates on the stuff too few people talk about -- the years of work toward gaining a correct seat that must precede any truly classical riding, and the rewards along the way of watching your horses become happy and beautiful. Focus is on improving the average horse and working on correct basics, not movements. This is a great contrast from all the competition oriented books that focus on teaching movements to the superhorse and rider, without talking enough about the development of the basic work.
Cannot praise this book highly enough. It is a practical bible for any classical rider.

Lifespan Integration: Connecting Ego States through Time, by Peggy Pace

This book describes the method which Peggy Pace developed for healing adults and adolescents who experienced trauma or neglect in childhood. Lifespan Integration therapy differs from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in that LI heals and integrates the body-minds of clients in multifaceted ways. LI therapy clears trauma memory and the defenses against early trauma throughout the body-mind. This is true even for cases when the trauma was pre-verbal and is not explicitly remembered. LI therapy can also be used to increase positive self-regard, to improve affect regulation, and to strengthen the core self. In her book, Pace describes how her Lifespan Integration method can be used to treat Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, anxiety and panic disorders, mood disorders, and eating disorders. In the chapter which discusses using LI to heal Dissociative Identity Disorder, Pace describes how Lifespan Integration therapy brings more coherence to the fragmented self systems of dissociated clients, eventually resulting in a unified self. The Lifespan Integration book includes a summary of recent discoveries in the field of neuroscience. Pace overviews what is known about how separated selves and self states become integrated within the developing child. Pace proposes in her book that neural integration continues throughout the lifespan, and can be expedited during therapy when the conditions required for neural integration are re-created within the therapeutic setting. Pace cites recent discoveries in the field of neuroscience to support her hypothesis about how and why her Lifespan Integration technique is so effective in the psychological healing of adult survivors of childhood trauma.

[aweful]
By A Customer
This is probably the most ill-formed book in general I have ever read, not to mention the worst grow book, period. The illustrations are CHEESY.
The photographs are of poor quality, you can barely discern them. The information is general, contradictory, unorganized... I wouln't trust a thing in it, which is strange because Jorge Cervantes is a genius, and his previous publications prove his skill. But this book is a no-no. Go for another, and don't be afraid to spend the bucks. You want climate matched with plant variety with specific feeding instructions, and plenty of do's and dont's. If your info is poor then your fruit will suffer.

Great outdoor marijuana growing ideas
By Leonard E. Green
This is a very good marijuana outdoor grow book that is packed with interesting ideas on how to grow marijuana outside. If you prefer growing the way that mother nature intended, then this is the book for you. This book also have great ideas about how to bud early in an outdoor environment, and it has great tips on guerrilla growing! I enjoyed it, and so will you.

I was surprised to find my personality there and that is very cool because it all makes sense
By sunsetdonkey
I am not a person who is reading personality horoscopes in bulk, predictions, match making and etc. Though I have read “Secret of the Serpent Bloodline” and I decided to buy this book too, just out of curiosity. There is a lot of sense in it. I was surprised to find my personality there and that is very cool because it all makes sense, actually you can see why you have problems with other people and get along well with the others (it is very clear how to alter the situation), or why you like or dislike different food. You have done it again Tau Tia! Thank you.

Amazing !
By GNN
You can find your personality by your blood type but also others personalities. As I know most of my friend's and family blood type now it is easy not only to understand their personalities but also to predict their attitude. It is amazing and useful. I was surprised by just how accurate the book is, I mainly only bought it because I enjoyed Tau Tia's other book so much and now I am glad I got it. A very good investment.

Presenting a diverse and dazzling collection from all over the continent, from Morocco to Zimbabwe, Uganda to Kenya. Helon Habila focuses on younger, newer writers - contrasted with some of their older, more established peers - to give a fascinating picture of a new and more liberated Africa. These writers are characterized by their engagement with the wider world and the opportunities offered by the end of apartheid, the end of civil wars and dictatorships, and the possibilities of free movement. Their work is inspired by travel and exile. They are liberated, global and expansive. As Dambudzo Marechera wrote: 'If you're a writer for a specific nation or specific race, then f*** you." These are the stories of a new Africa, punchy, self-confident and defiant.Includes stories by: Fatou Diome; Aminatta Forna; Manuel Rui; Patrice Nganang; Leila Aboulela; Zo Wicomb; Alaa Al Aswany; Doreen Baingana; E.C. Osondu.

The Arrangers of Marriage by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

My new husband carried the suitcase out of the taxi and led the way
into the brownstone, up a flight of brooding stairs, down an airless
hallway with frayed carpeting, and stopped at a door. The number
2B, unevenly fashioned from yellowish metal, was plastered on it.
‘We’re here,’ he said. He had used the word ‘house’ when he told me
about our home. I had imagined a smooth driveway snaking between
cucumber-coloured lawns, a door leading into a hallway, walls with
sedate paintings. A house like those of the white newlyweds in the
American films that NTA showed on Saturday nights.
He turned on the light in the living room, where a beige couch sat
alone in the middle, slanted, as though dropped there by accident.
The room was hot; old, musty smells hung heavy in the air.
‘I’ll show you around,’ he said.
The smaller bedroom had a bare mattress lodged in one corner.
The bigger bedroom had a bed and chest of drawers, and a phone on
the carpeted floor. Still, both rooms lacked a sense of space, as though
the walls had become uncomfortable with each other, with so little
between them.
‘Now that you’re here, we’ll get more furniture. I didn’t need that
much when I was alone,’ he said.
‘OK,’ I said. I felt light-headed. The ten-hour flight from Lagos to

New York and the interminable wait while the American customs
officer raked through my suitcase had left me woozy, stuffed my
head full of cotton wool. The officer had examined my foodstuffs as if
they were spiders, her gloved fingers poking at the waterproof bags
of ground egusi and dried onugbu leaves and uziza seeds, until she
seized my uziza seeds. She feared I would grow them on American
soil. It didn’t matter that the seeds had been sun-dried for weeks and
were as hard as a bicycle helmet.

Worthwhile
By Reader in Tokyo
This book was published in 2011 and contained 29 works by as many writers. There were 26 short stories, two excerpts from novels and an essay.

Included were authors from 19 countries in the north, west, center, east and south. The nations represented most frequently were Zimbabwe, South Africa and Nigeria, with 3-4 authors each. Missing were authors from places like Ghana (which contributed important writers in earlier decades), the Dem. Rep. of Congo (a large nation often under-represented in English-language anthologies) and the Ivory Coast.

About three-quarters of the works were written in English, the rest (2-3 each) were translated from French, Arabic and Portuguese. As is often the case with anthologies for this continent, there was nothing from the many indigenous languages.

In this anthology, the oldest writers were Guinea's Camara Laye (1924-80), South Africa's Alex La Guma (1925-85) and Angola's Manuel Rui (1941-). The youngest were Sierra Leone's Olufemi Terry (1973-), Egypt's Mansoura Ez-Eldin (1976-) and Nigeria's Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (1977-). Others included Zimbabwe's Dambudzo Marechera, George Makana Clark and Yvonne Vera, Egypt's Alaa al-Aswany, Congo's Alain Mabanckou, Morocco's Laila Lalami, Sudan's Leila Aboulela, Nigeria's Uwem Akpan, and Kenya's Binyavanga Wainaina. Two-thirds of the writers were born after 1960; earlier authors were included by the editor for the sake of comparison. Many of the younger writers selected were recent prize-winners of one kind or another. Nearly half were living abroad, in the US, UK or Europe, often in teaching positions, or had died abroad (Camara Laye and La Guma).

In his introduction, the editor categorized many of the book's authors under 50 as "third generation" and "post-colonialist." Many lived or worked outside their home countries, and just under half were women. They disdained colonialism, distrusted nationalism and held fairly cosmopolitan attitudes on gender, class and sexuality. On the other hand, they faced criticism by some for lacking a political ideology. As two factors stimulating publishing and especially the short story, the editor cited the Internet -- which reached much of urban Africa from the late 1990s -- and the launching of the Caine Prize for African Writing in 2000.

Two-thirds of the works in the book had been written or published since 2000; from the 1980s and 90s, there were 3-4 pieces each. There was one story each from the 1950s (Camara Laye), 60s (La Guma) and the 70s (Rui). Each of these early works was interesting for its style. Camara's hallucinatory writing would've been at home in a collection on French surrealism. La Guma's story portrayed with gritty realism some working-class people and a double standard in race relations, and Rui depicted counter-revolutionary "puppet forces" in Angola in a local version of socialist realism.

Works enjoyed most by this reader included Clark's story, narrated by a boy in the Rhodesian countryside employed at a white-run orphanage in decline; in it, the imagery succeeded in making the landscape an oppressive character in the story. Al-Aswany's work, narrated in Cairo between the 1960s and 90s, showed the decline of an ethnic minority and succeeded in a few pages in depicting a lost world. An excerpt from Lalami's novel showed a man's culture shock on his return from Paris to his family in Morocco. Themes in other stories included various types of oppression of women, hedonistic life and poverty in the cities, war and repression, conflicted feelings caused by living abroad, a student's growing sexual awareness and sexual tourism by foreigners.

Some of the works were set abroad: brides from arranged marriages arrived in a foreign cities and tried to get along with their husbands (Adichie, Aboulela), an African woman battled racism in Europe with mordant wit (Diome), and an African had an ominous encounter with racism in 1913 Berlin (Nganang). A father and son fled strife in Ethiopia for the US (Mengiste), an author pondered hatred directed at him by another black man in Paris (Mabanckou), a doctor sought out a lost love in a British sanatorium (Forna), and a dissolute African man experienced Oxford (Marechera).

In comparison with themes from earlier African writers and anthologies, there was little or nothing on reimagining the precolonial past or depicting the legacy of colonialism, the shift from country to city, fables, or communion with the spirit world.

For the most part, the style of the stories was straightforward. Exceptions were one story on women's communication with river spirits in Egypt that switched back and forth between several unclear viewpoints (Ez-Eldin). And a comically grotesque description of various deaths that might've been related - ironically -- to a white man's curse (Ba Ka Khosa). Postmodernism was represented by an incomprehensible piece from South Africa's Vladislavic seeking parallels between the end of apartheid and the collapse of the USSR, and one from Kenya's Wainaina on contemporary attitudes around the continent, whose point seemed to be that no narrative could encompass the chaos. In another story, a boy described fighting play-swordfights inspired by Tolkien; others mentioned MTV and rappers and referenced Granta. In passing, stories from other anthologies have mentioned Bogart, American presidents and Michael Jackson. As globalization proceeds, it's possible to imagine future works continuing the allusions in a manner similar to the MacOndo writers of Latin America.

In comparison with the diversity of writing contained in some earlier anthologies on Africa, much of the writing in this book seemed a bit restrained. This reader would've enjoyed a few more pieces that were politically aware, more stylistically experimental without being opaque and focused on love between people -- men and women, parents and children -- or on first-person monologues dynamically expressing a character. These can be found elsewhere in stories like "The Man" by Emmanuel Dongala, "As the Crow Flies" by Vronique Tadjo and "Babyface" by Koffi Kwahul. Pieces containing things as mundane as people working in the government and the private sector were likewise absent from the collection. Nor was there much apparent impact on the religious attitudes of those who went overseas. Some of the longer stories in particular seemed nearly formless and for this reader were among the least interesting.

Large anthologies of the past 50 years or so include African Voices (a.k.a. Darkness and Light) (1958), An African Treasury (1960), Modern African Stories (1964), Africa in Prose (1969), African Short Stories (1985), Looking for a Rain God (1990), the Heinemann Book of Contemporary African Short Stories (1992), Under African Skies (1997), the Picador Book of African Stories (2000), the Anchor Book of Modern African Stories (2002), the 900-page Rienner Anthology of African Literature (2008) and Gods and Soldiers: The Penguin Anthology of Contemporary African Writing (2009). Gods and Soldiers, the closest recent counterpart to Granta's book, offers nonfiction as well, though its fiction contains more excerpts from novels than short stories. A recent anthology of French-language writers is From Africa: New Francophone Stories (2004).

An anthology containing very brief excerpts from 200+ works by African writers and travelers in Africa, together with much enlightening background, is Africa: A Traveller's Literary Companion (1995).

A Sterling Collection of African Short Stories
By Fairbanks Reader - Bonnie Brody
This is a truly wonderful collection of the "third generation of African writers, who, until now, have rarely been anthologized." The editor, Helon Habila, states that his goal is to catch "the range and complexity of African short fiction since independence". She calls the writers in this anthology the 'post-nationalist' generation. Many of the writers live outside of Africa, several of them residing in Europe and the U.S.

"It's a sad but apparently undeniable fact that the short story has always taken second place to the novel in Africa. Some of the best African writers simply don't write short stories." Included in those who don't write short stories are Coetzee, Soyinka, Galgut, and many more. The editor believes that currently we are witnessing a renaissance in African literature. A boost to the short story is the Caine Prize for African Writing which originated in 2000. Many of the writers in this anthology have won this prize or have been short-listed for it.

The editor asks a valid questions: "How can you gather together the stories of a continent that is larger than China, Europe, and the United States put together? How can you 'anthologize' fifty-three countries, a billion people and over a thousand ethnic groups?" The anthology is organized "generationally, starting with the youngest writer and ending with the oldest". "Africa's strength is not, contrary to what most people like to think, its homogeneity, but in its diversity of cultures and languages and religions and skin colours. It is a large place; it contains multitudes." These multitudes are reflected in the stories included in this wonderful anthology.

My favorites, alphabetically, are the following:

The Arrangers of Marriage by Chimamda Ngozi Adichie. Adichie is one of my favorite writers and this story was included in her published work, This Thing Around My Neck. Ms. Adichie is NIgerian and is the author of two novels and a short story collection. She is a MacArthur Fellow. The story is about a Nigerian woman who enters into an arranged marriage with an American physician from NIgeria and feels like her identity is slowly being stolen from her.

An Ex-Mas Feast by Uwem Akpan was included in his collection Say You're One of Them which I have read previously. He, too, is Nigerian but now lives and works in the U.S. The story takes place in the slums of Nairobi where a family tries to survive by living off the proceeds of the oldest daughter, Maisha, a prostitute. She is planning to leave home and this turns the whole family dynamic upside down.

Street of the House of Wonders by Rachida el-Charni was new to me. Ms. El-Charni is from Tunis and continues to reside there. In this very short story, a woman is the victim of a thief who steals her necklace right off her neck. She chases him down and confronts him while others cowardly watch and offer no assistance.

Abdulrazak Gurnah is the author of Cages. He hails from Zanzibar and currently teaches at the University of Kent in the U.K. He is the author of seven novels. In Cages, Hamid works in a small bodega in exchange for his room. One day a woman begins to come in as a new customer. Hamid is smitten with her and sees her as someone "to be sung to, to be won with display and courage" unlike some women who can be bought with a few shillings. Hamid obsesses about her and feels shame because of that. Ultimately, she is not as he has imagined.

Alex La Guma is the author of Slipper Satin, the last story in the anthology. Born in Cape Town, South Africa, he was a political figure in his nation. He has written several novels. In Slipper Satin, Myra returns home after four months in jail for having an affair with a white man. This was against the law. The women in her village call her names and say she brought shame upon them. Myra is filled with bitterness and loss. The only redeeming thing in her life is the upcoming marriage of her sister Addie.

Laila Lalami is from Morocco. She has won several awards for her writing and currently teaches at the University of California at Riverside. Her story, Homecoming, is about Aziz who leaves Casablanca and his wife for five years to work in Spain. His plan is to earn enough money and then return to Casablanca to start a business. When he returns, things are very different than he had anticipated.

Alain Mabanckou, the author of The Fugitive, is a Franco-Congolese novelist and teaches at the University of California in Los Angeles. He is the author of several novels. His short story is about a young man who reflects about an incident in his life that took place seventeen years ago when he was a young African man. He did not buy his tickets for the Paris metro and gets chased by three ticket inspectors all through the station. The most angry and vehement about catching him is the black inspector who thinks all Africans should go back where they came from - they are ruining Paris. The young man ends up at the police station, pays his fine and believes that the black inspector "was probably hoping for the death penalty, which would have somehow returned a little dignity to his race. But what dignity? That was the question, and remains the question I feel sure I'll keep asking myself, in every book I write."

Maaza Mengiste was born in Ethiopia and now lives in New York City. She has received several fellowships and her debut novel has been translated into several languages. Her short story, A Good Soldier, is about Mesfin who has fled from Ethiopia to Los Angeles with his son. However, he can not flee his personal demons.

This collection really wowed me. I found that there was one common theme in several of the stories. The anticipated outcome rarely ever came to fruition and the protagonist was surprised with what came to pass. The stories are varied in theme and narrative. However, they all carry with them a taste of the life and ambiance of Africa. I loved the collection and highly recommend it.

Stories taken from life
By Friederike Knabe
"But I grope after language to describe the feeling I experience on my evening walks, the light in the air and on the sea. This pleases me: that some things remain beyond my grasp..." thus muses the jogger in Henrietta Rose-Innes' "Promenade" about a significant encounter between him, a middle-aged unassuming copy writer, and a young ambitious boxer. The sense of enjoying "things remaining beyond (our) grasp" could be a leitmotiv for many of the stories in the "GRANTA Book of the African Short Story", encouraging us to read with open eyes, mind and heart. Collected and introduced by award winning Nigerian author, Helon Habila, this new anthology is an outstanding and wide-ranging rich smorgasbord of stories by twenty six writers from nineteen countries all across Africa - stories written in English or translated from French, Portuguese or Arabic.

Habila's highly informative 'Introduction' gives us a sense of his difficulty in selecting stories from the vast available material covering "fifty three countries with more than a thousand ethnic groups". He also comments helpfully on previous efforts to anthologize African writings and explains why his take is somewhat different and more contemporary in its objectives. Rather than highlighting the many common themes pertinent across the vast African continent, his aim is to provide examples of the diverse themes and approaches that have emerged since independence and/or are of importance to the younger, postcolonial generation of writers ("the third generation"). Of course, Habila adds, it is impossible to capture the diversity of African writing, even with the restriction on "the short story" in a "continent the size of China, Europe and the United States put together".

The stories, many selected for this anthology in dialog with the authors, address everything from the intimate domestic to the broad spectrum of social and political tensions, from immigrant/emigrant experience to glimpses into life on the margins of society, from power games and exploitation to racial issues. Some are highly satirical, e.g. Banyavanga Wainaina's "Ships in High Transit" or the re-imagined historical encounter with "The Moustached Man" as presented by Patrice Nganang. We find familiar names, such as Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, whose story "The Arrangers of Marriage", a touching and profound story about a new immigrant to the USA, already published in her own excellent collection, The Thing Around Your Neck opens this anthology. Many others are less familiar or not known in North America at all.

It is impossible for me to highlight any stories as my favourites, there is none that did not touch me and made me reflect after I had turned the page. Many of the authors live and work outside their country of birth now, for shorter or longer periods, the majority of them in North America or Europe. That in itself gives reason to pause. Reading their brief bios at the end of the book, (followed by some googling) helps us to better appreciate them and their work. Hardly any of the authors represented in this anthology collection are debut authors. More than half have won the prestigious Caine Prize for African Writing, and are known also for their novels and other writings. [Friederike Knabe]

"Going Elemental: The Essentials of Success" is a soul-enriching collection of inspirational stories by real leaders from all walks of life, as they narrate their life-changing moments that defined who they are. Each story, including that of the authors Chris Richardson and Randall Gifford, serve to illustrate the untapped leadership potential in all of us, and how they are part of the Going Elemental framework for leadership success. Each narrative has its own voice, time, and place, and are caringly supported with Edie Everette's brilliant illustrations.
