During the Crimean War, for the first time, newspaper correspondents were able to provide the public with eye-witness accounts of the scenes of conflict. This book combines such descriptions from "The Times" of London with a discussion of the war, based on historical scholarship.|In addition to the famous accounts submitted by William Howard Russell, all areas of the Black Sea theatre are covered, including the Sea of Azov, the Caucasus and Bulgaria, along with other major theatre of war, the Baltic, where the Admiral and Commander-in-Chief sometimes acted as "Times" correspondent. This marks a return to the contemporary perception of the war, where the whole conflict was observed, rather than the subsequent concentration on the heroism, incompetence and recovery on the few square miles of the Crimean Uplands that have come to dominate the modern image of the war. 103 b&w illustrations

About the Author

Great guide for a Catholic funeral

I wanted a funeral mass, but knew nothing about how to prepare for one. Most of my family are not Catholic so If I died before them they wouldn't know how to do a funeral mass either. This little book is simple to read, pick the readings and prayers. This is a step by step help book that you can leave with your important papers so that your funeral will be as you would like it to be. I found this book helpful and comforting.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is assisting families with Catholic funeral Mass planning. It is inexpensive and offers the complete selection of collects, antiphons, and (to me) MOST important the recommended lectionary readings. The cost of the book is low enough that it can be given to the bereaved family to review and study, if necessary and/or convenient without concern for its being returned. I use this book on a regular basis in bereavement ministry.

Its hard to say 'I love it' considering it to help with a funeral Mass. But, my sister and I used it to do the funeral Mass for my dad. It was very helpful and gave all the selections of readings and responsorials that we needed. It also provided choices to recommend for children vs adults. I would recommend it.

Best beginners book in market!!

Sperling's book stands out as the most useful polymer science text, compiling essential elements of varied physical properties and behaviour. The third edition has up to date material on all aspects of polymer physics including chapters on polymer surfaces and interfaces as well as on multicomponent polymer systems and liquid crystalline polymers. In my opinion, as a beginners guide, the book is definitely outscores over all other texts in market including Billmeyer, Painter Coleman, Rodriquez, etc. The book also contains a good description of various polymer characterization techniques.
The material covered is adequate to provide basic information about each field in polymer physics, and the textbook has enough material to be useful for two or three courses. The author presents a lot of tables in the book, that succintly summarize important points related to that topic. Coupled with Strobl's book, which has slightly advanced description of polymer physics, and Doi's Introduction to polymer physics, which has mathematically intensive description of statistical mechanics of polymers, you have three texts to teach you essentially everything there is to know in Polymer Physics!! (Perhaps you can add a text for Polymer Rheology, say by Larson!)

Good Textbook, Better Reference

Like most textbooks, its verbose and hard to read at times. However, if one were to study polymers for more than just a course, it makes a handy reference tool unlike any other I or my friends have come across. Having this book for other courses would have been worth paying full price (but you don't have to) and I only wish I had come across it earlier.

This book introduced me to physical polymer science. I have a strong interest in this field. The book is very informative but not easy to read. However, it is very helpful that key points in the chapters are depicted quite nicely by diagrams and graphs.

Still not a perfect solution for this!

I got this while I am waiting on Joi Mahon's book to come out in October. It is OK I guess. It uses the fit method where you pin the pattern pieces together on your body which is pretty much impossible to do without a fit buddy. It was a pretty interesting read, it is just that I don't have a soul that could help me pin a pattern on me like is in this book. Still waiting on a real solution for fitting before sewing. I took Joi's classes on Craftsy.com and they are absolutely terrific! Actually the closest I have come to a great solution for this, I can't wait for that book to come out!!!

They're Not Wearing Pants!!

I should have noticed that none of the models on the cover of this book were wearing pants. So I guess it's my own fault that I was disappointed to find that pants fitting is no part of this book. In fact, pants only appear in one or two illustrations and are mentioned briefly in one paragraph. It turns out that there is another book by these authors that covers pants.

I bought the book because, even though I've been sewing a long time and have made everything up to and including lined tailored jackets, you can always learn something new. And in fact, I did pick up a few tips and ideas that will be helpful in fitting tops and jackets. The issue with commercial patterns is that they are all over the map as far as fit is concerned. You can't adjust them all the same way and have them come out with the same fit. As I've grown older and, shall we say, lumpier, it's gotten harder to make things work.

I do agree with others that the tissue fitting that is a major part of this book is difficult and not always useful because tissue paper fits differently than fabric. However, looking at the photos of the pin fits on the various models, made me aware of some issues I have and how I can give the ideas in the book a try without actually messing around with pinning the fragile tissue paper on my body.

Speaking of paper, I always have a roll of paper on hand to trace off the patterns. This preserves the original, reduces the probability that I'll cut on the wrong line of the multi-size pattern (since I only trace the right ones!) and allows me to get wild and crazy with making adjustments. If i wanted to pin-fit I could without tearing my original pattern beyond repair. I can always go back to the original pattern pieces and re-trace if my experiments go too astray.

I highly recommend buying a bolt of muslin on sale and making muslins. It doesn't take that long and it will give a better idea of fit than making yourself crazy with the pattern tissue paper.

All in all, I'm not sorry I bought the book (except for the pants thing!) and I'm looking forward to trying a couple of things on the next jacket I make.

Wish I'd found it years ago

Everything I ever needed to know about fitting but ignored when my mom tried to teach me when I was 12. I've been pretty much your once-in-a-while sewer and knew the things I made mostly didn't fit, but didn't have much idea how to identify the problem, much less know what to do about it. In terms I can understand, these ladies addressed every problem I've ever had AND helped me understand WHY I have that fitting problem AND what to do about it. They make perfect sense both in what they say and how they say it. And, like my mom, they teach you how to do the fit in the paper itself, same as my mom. Plus, they offer a lot of handy tip and ways to do routine things. I read it cover to cover and I feel like sewing now could actually become a pleasure instead of a massive exercise in frustration. FINALLY! This book is staying ON the sewing cabinet at all times!!!
