The design applications of the preboring pressuremeter test include: shallow foundations under vertical loads, deep foundations under vertical and horizontal loads, ground anchors, cantilever drilled shaft walls and anchored bulkheads, pavements, stone columns, ground improvement and compaction control. The preboring pressuremeter is of little use in slope stability analysis and in conventional active and passive earth pressure problems, although there is potential for future developments in the earth pressure problem area.

About the Author

Jean-Louis Briaud (1949,�France)�received his Civil Engineering education in France and Canada. He has been a Professor of Civil Engineering at Texas A&M University since 1978 and is�currently the Head of the Geotechnical Engineering and Surveying Division at this institute. He has published well over 100 articles and reports mainly in the areas of in situ testing and soil-structure interaction. As owner-manager of Briaud Engineers, he has been a consultant for numerous large structures including high rises, bridges, tunnels, offshore platforms, and power plants. During his consulting work and during his research work over the last 17 years, Dr Briaud has performed and analyzed over 1000 pressuremeter tests.�Among other awards, Dr Briaud is a recipient of the American Society of Civil Engineers Huber Prize and of the American Society for Testing and Materials Hogentogler Award.

About the Author
Jon Saphier is the founder of Research for Better Teaching (RBT), a professional development organization dedicated to improving teaching and learning. Besides The Skillful Teacher, Dr. Saphier is the author of other publications on teaching, leadership and school improvement, including John Adams Promise: How to Have Good Schools for All Our Children Not Just Some (2005). He devotes his time to long-term, in-depth, systemic change projects in selected districts. A masterful teacher, he conducts workshops, coaching sessions, and delivers keynotes that bring to life the principles and strategies in The Skillful Teacher. �He is active in public policy reform to promote the professionalization of teaching and leadership and has also served as a school administrator, staff developer, and teacher (K-12).

Mary Ann Haley-Speca is a senior consultant and former director of training with RBT and has worked with teachers and administrators in public, private, urban, suburban, rural and international school districts since 1990. A seasoned and engaging staff developer, she enables teachers and leaders to create school cultures and classroom environments that support high achievement for all students. She also co-authored two popular RBT publications, Activators and Summarizers. Before joining RBT, Haley-Speca served as a district-wide staff developer, program supervisor, and classroom teacher in grades 3-12.

Robert Gower is a retired professor of University of Massachusetts Lowell, where he helped develop the doctoral program in Leadership in Schooling and is still active teaching online courses for the university. Low quality

I can't say a lot about the content of this book; it has been a very difficult read. Tons of research compressed into one book, hard to follow, with scattered summaries that don't follow the main text sequence. But what I would really like to comment on is the Kindle experience.

This book is one of two required texts for an education class I am taking. My friend has the print edition, so I have been able to compare. Two major negative points jumped out to me at once:

First, the tables, figures, and other graphics are super low quality. All of these are bitmaps or some other raster type (whatever Kindle uses for eBooks, I assume) One cannot zoom in on them without changing the text size and losing the figure placement relative to the text. Not that it would help, though; when I do manage to get a figure to occupy the whole page, it is blurry and pixelated. My friend's print edition has beautiful figures, with precise lines and quality text. (For a typical example, those of you who can compare, look at Table 9.3.)

Second, there are no page numbers. A quote from the book's website: "While the book index is included, the page numbers have no meaning in the Kindle eBook, so it is only provided to indicate the topics that are included in the book." What nonsense! My teacher often instructs us to read the table on page such-and-such or turn to this page and read the section on whatever. I end up looking over at a friend's book, copying an exact phrase from that section into the Kindle search tool, and trying to find it that way. I think the author could even include a little "(Page 493 in the print edition)" blurb at the bottom to indicate the parallel. And the book's Contents (left hand side pullout in the Windows Kindle Reader) does not even include links to specific chapters, nor the index! I had to bookmark the index so I could go there to click on the links to chapters.

This brings up a point related to my first one. Tables, figures, and other graphics are totally rasterized, so I can't search using Kindle's tool to find "Figure 3.1" or "Table 5.2". Again, I have to copy text from around the figure from a friend's text edition, then search for that.

In summary, content aside, I feel cheated with the $49 price tag for this digital edition. Ten dollars off the print price is not worth this low quality. And I could get a used paperback copy for less. I have seen free Kindle books on Amazon with better linking and graphics. Let's hope the publishers can correct these issues soon (and without releasing another edition you have to pay for again).

Extremely thorough. Essential for any teacher.

This is an extremely thick and thorough academic textbook on every aspect of teaching in all subject areas - maths, arts, english, etc. It's not a quick read but I would consider it an absolutely essential textbook for any college student who's looking to be a teacher one day. His chapter on Objectives (lesson planning step #1) is very, very good. Absolutely highly recommend.

A Staff Developer/Administrator/Teacher Opinion

The Skillful Teacher is an incredible tool for working with both new and experienced teachers to fine-tune their classroom skills and expectations for student behavior and achievement. It explains what can (and often does) go wrong in a classroom, gives clear examples of ways to implement classroom procedures, and cites the pertinent research to support recommendations. I have used this book (mostly in its first edition which is very similar) to work teachers for years; it is thought provoking for both needy teachers and "master" teachers. I think highly enough of this book to have given it to my son when he began teaching high school.

The Department of Health and Human Services has identified Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) as the foremost public health problem in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) report that, as of December 31, 1994, there were 441,528 documented cases of AIDS in this country, and the number is increasing. AIDS is an illness characterized by a defect in natural immunity against disease. Many more individuals are known to be infected with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) but do not have symptoms or the defming characteristics of AIDS. The incubation period for AIDS may range from 1 to 10 or more years in adults and 6 months to several years in children. Infected persons appear to be capable of transmitting infection indefinitely, even if they remain asymptomatic. In order to increase the number of minority investigators conducting research on HIV infection and 1 AIDS, NIMH conducted a 3h-day technical workshop for minority investigators on July 24-27. 1990, in Fairlakes, Virginia. University-based research programs were asked to nominate investigators who were selected on the basis of a referred 1 0-page prospectus for a proposed research project. Getting past the government gobbledegook.

Most persons pursuing careers in higher education are expected to engage in research and seek funding for those efforts. In most universities, "research" is considered one of the three legs of the stool of knowledge. Moreover, doing "research" typically implies that the academic seek outside funding to pay for those research activities. Although there are many sources of research funding, the federal government stands out as the most significant source of research support. Therefore, when a group of senior level managers with funding responsibilities write a book describing the funding process, and some of the secrets and pitfalls of the process, those developing research grant applications would do well to become familiar with this book.
Pequegnat and Stover hold senior level positions in the US National Institute of Mental Health and specialize in behavioral research relating to AIDS. The book they have developed brings together more than 30 contributors who have worked in various aspects of AIDS research, many from positions at NIMH, and others from University or other research viewpoints. Because of this focus, most of the book focuses on the processes particular to NIMH and uses AIDS research as the focus for examples. It is obvious, however, that the principles and processes laid out will be useful to those seeking research support from other federal program agencies, as well as from state, industry or private funding entities.
The book has three sections and 20 chapters. Section I deals with "Grantsmanship and the Review Process;" its eight chapters lay out several important considerations for any person interested in developing a research application. The pieces deal with the general philosophy of a research program, gathering information from government communications, and an overview of the ways in which a government agency views submissions from university or other researchers. This section also addresses matters relating to research design, hypothesis development, and even ways to better understand and use feedback from application reviewers.
The ten chapters of section II deal with "Developing Sections of Your Research Application" and provide a wealth of applicable information about developing exciting hypotheses for testing, using qualitative inquiry instrumentation, relating to, and gaining assistance from other disciplines, and some nuts-and-bolts issues relating to human subjects, budget, the data analytic plan, and even presentation of staff resumes to support and strengthen the grant application package.
Section III, with two chapters covers "Disseminating Your Findings." This section addresses delivering a talk about the research, and a final chapter provides a great deal of detail on adding visuals to presentations-charts graphs and other support materials. Three appendix sections provide an actual example of a successful research application and addresses issues such as data analysis, budget justification and other issues such as charts, timelines and visual aids.
Several chapters will be especially useful for the relatively inexperienced grant-seeker. Pequegnat's chapter on "Signals to the Field" highlights the role of Program Announcements (PAs) and Requests for Applications (RFAs) that signal particular areas of interest to the granting agency. The chapter also suggests other ways in which interest is announced, ways to carefully read those communications in order to be responsive to the guidance.
AIDS is the area of interest and expertise for all of the contributors, yet the subtitle of the volume, "A Guide for Social and Behavioral Scientists" suggests useful application to other areas of inquiry. It is not difficult to extrapolate the specifics of NIMH AIDS research to other areas of health research, and to behavioral and social science research in general. The pieces on research design, qualitative inquiry, study design, and others will be useful to academics and research designers in a broad field of interest.
The book is well organized, clearly written, and not unnecessarily bound by particular jargon of the contributing researchers. It should be helpful reading to a wide group, albeit specialized, group of scholars.
